Koi food thread - so what was the verdict?
Hello guys spent the past few days trawling through yarns and yarns of koi food information as I need to buy some more food, online I found a thread that you guys on here started where RS2000 and Stuffyrat and alike have spent some considerable time in evaluating brands where it looks like its the same food but rebranded etc, after reading all 5 pages of and many others what was your final verdict? I am happy to be guided by your findings but unsure if it was Coppens top koi or OSW that was thought to offer the best balance of growth and colour and all season, Low ash, cost etc ? could someone please clarify what food you guys are using and where you are buying it from, I nearly purchased some JPD SHOGUN and then read all the posts so now unsure...… confused .com Thanks Guys Steve.

Hi Steve.
Not sure what others use but I am currently using Queni koi a mix of premium growth and colour plus which the fish seem to love. I have used Orchard fisheries food as well which they seemed to like but not as much as the queni stuff which is a shame as the orchard pellets seem to get great reviews and is a really good price, I will try it again next year to see how they react.

Hi Stev, I have used Queni kois ( coppens ) for a few years now.
Used the Ultimate which I found browned the water, Jap mix was fine but not great growth and now useing Premium growth at a very reasonable price.
Can honestly say my koi have done very well this season on it, and at £55 for 15 kg incl del it is spot on.
My koi look great on it and have grown very very well.
But I am going to try another brand of Coppens osw very soon, so will see.John

Thanks guys, are you buying from QKoi direct or from another source ? seems very good value, would this be suitable for winter or do I need a specific wheatgerm pellet? thanks for your help Steve...

The premium Queni Koi food seems similar or almost identical to the Coppens Top Koi.
I won't buy JPD again.
We know JPD comes from the Coppens factory. We don't know for certain if it is identical to the rest of Coppens range but re-branded as JPD. The problem for me is the fact the JPD website claims all their food is made in Japan, and this is absolutely not true, so that reason alone is enough to justify not buying it.
I've got enough food to last the winter:
5KG of JPD Yamato - purchased before I learned the above.
3 KG of Saki Hikari Growth which I'm still feeding now and will keep a kilo to see the fry through the winter.
2 KG of Saki Multi-Season
11KG of Kusuri Multi-Season. The ingredients of this look spot on being a winter food where the main ingredient is white fish meal.
All that should last me till Spring and then I'll start buying the Coppens range, specifically Top Koi for the Summer and OSW for Spring and Autumn.
Also have NT Labs probiotic Growth. Can't vouch for it as water parameters weren't the best at the time I fed. Parameters had become perfect at the time I moved onto Saki Growth in June this year and some of my Koi have stretched a lot this summer. (12cm to 30cm and 24cm to 40cm being the most impressive).
And finally I have NT Labs Staple. The Koi definitely don't seem too keen on this and I didn't see any growth when I was feeding it.

Hi RS,
Great work uncovering the premium brands and the Coppens connections, agree with what you say that no doubt much is just rebranded however we will never know exactly what goes into each mix for each brand so there could be subtle differences but not subtle enough to warrant the extra ££££ we have been spending from what i can see...…I am nearly out of NT Probiotic so I have ordered some 3mm and 6mm OSW today and also some 3mm wheatgerm, i assume this will be suitable food until the temps drop right down and i stop feeding, Many thanks for your help mate Steve.
