    Water changes...

    Hi all.

As a complete newbie to pond keeping, could someone please explain water changing ? I've read into it and maybe grasp the basics but I'd like to know the reason behind it. It seems alot of people suggest a 10% water change once per week ( or thereabouts ) during the summer months. So as an example, if I built a 5000 litre pond would I be looking at dumping 500 litres per week for a few months every year ? Or have I got it completely wrong ?

If this is a regular part of the hobby it seems very wasteful unless the water can be harvested for watering the garden or put to another use. Its just something which I need more information on as it will influence if I build a pond or not.

Any help or information will be gratefully received.

the water from cleaning filters especially is great for gardens, the best way would probably to dig a sump and run your waste to that then run a pipe around the garden attached to a sump pump and you got a automatic garden watering system more or less. also some water companies will give you a rebate on your bill if you are not just chucking the water down the drain

Every drop of water that goes into my pond ends up on the garden. That's around 1500 litres per week, and metered too.

Even that seems wasteful as the garden doesn't always need it and the water butts are sometimes still full from the previous change.

This is why I've started building an anoxic filtration system in the hope it reduces the need for water changes. There's a few Youtube videos from people using anoxic filtration claiming they only do partial water changes twice a year and their Koi stay healthy.

I asked a similar question to OP and got some interesting answers on this thread:

Thankyou for taking the time to answer my question.

My garden is rather minimal so requires little watering. I'm not really a " green fingered " gardener ( hence considering a water garden instead ).

It would be possible to run a sump /pump to waste but it would be a massive amount of work due to the waste being at the front of the house and the proposed pond in the back garden which is separated by a slab on type one base path of around 12 metres.

The anoxic filter could be the correct path for me to look at. Am I right in saying that I should be looking for posts by MankeSanke ? ( Am I spelling that right ? ). I'd like to find out more about it first before I add something like it to my plans.

RS2000 ( Is that a reference to a Ford ? ). Do you have a " pond page " showing your filter system ? A picture speaks a thousand words as they say.

    Thanks.

If you want to read about anoxic filtration, start with my article on the link below and, if you want more, follow the links at the end to Kevin Novak's blog and free CD book.

Almost everything you need to know about anoxic is on Manky Sanke's site, which he's now linked to.

If you have a look at BigCarpChaser's build thread he has kindly posted pictures of how he built the anoxic baskets (page 45 - 47 ish from memory). I've basically done exactly the same thing (copied him), and only finished it this evening. Not got it up and running yet, undecided whether to run it now or wait till Spring (as I might use the "anoxic" section of the pond for something else in the interim.

Yes the username is reference to the original Ford of the same name.
