    Newbie Genral Help

Good afternoon everyone this is my first post hope it is in the correct section

I have had Koi for twenty years basically started with a small pond for the kids then the koi grew as have my kids and three ponds on I still have most of those Koi that are now over 23 years old. I recently decided to upgrade my pond for the last time it is 6ft deep 4 meters long and 3 meters wide fiberglassed with a 2 meter by 800mm window.
I have upgraded my filtration with a Filtreu 20 drum and bio bed the pond has bottom drain with a spin drifter everything has now been running about five months I had some water issues to start basically high Nitrite but I have solved this via water changes as I knew the system was stabilising and most likely still is.
As the pond was all nice and sparkly I got a bit excited and over the last month or so I have added some new koi one of which is a Jumbo Kohaku. I am probably overstocked in reality I want some advice on how to deal with the problem I don't want to get rid of any fish as I like them all they all have history especially the old ones. I get a build up of waste in the bottom of the pond they must all crap in the morning I can see it slowly creeping towards the bottom drain but it does take some time normally by mid day it has gone but lots of small bits are floating around.
Looking in from the pond above you cant see it but through the window you can and it does not look great.
Could a Bakki shower help with this or do I need a stronger pump I am currently running an Oase 12000 Premium eco I don't have a skimmer and don't really want one plus my surface water is fine any suggestions would be great.
apologies for the long story in advance.

Many thanks for all your help

I would say your pump is way too small as your pond is 1.8m deep 4m long and 3m wide that makes 21600 litres I think?

You only have a 12000 lph pump when you probably need a 20000 lph pump or even a 30000 lph pump allowing for flow restrictions.

If I am reading your set up correctly you are going bottom drain to drum to bio chamber then pumped back to pond? If so then the 30000 lph pump is the way to go but if you have other filtration after the bio then maybe a 20000 lph and a 10000 lph pump could be another option?

Your 12000 lph pump is probably only turning the pond over once every 3 hours if you are lucky allowing for flow losses? I would have thought you should aim for a turn over rate of once every hour or maybe in the winter once every 2 hours?

Only thing is can your drum and bio chamber handle that sort of flow rate to get that sort of turn over rate?

My pond is 20000lt I have 2x 12000 lt/h pumps moving water up 2 m so actuality is a total 14000lt/h. My pond is crystal clear.. I also use swell sludge control tabs to break down poop etc

    Marckoi,

I agree with Frimley, your pump needs to be bigger turning over the water in your pond more quickly. I have around a 20,000 litre pond running through the same drum, gravity fed with an 18,000 litre pump which keeps the water fairly clear. The drum could probably take more flow but then will of course operate more often especially when the water is dirty.

JohnS don't you mean 24000 lph or have you allowed for flow losses?

Yes I was allowing for flow losses, it overloads my nexus 320 a little but I have a big box of grog and sponge/ cotton fleece to pick out remaing particles

What amazed me the other day when I was looks at the spec of the Nexus and the Eazy Pod is that they both have the same max flow rate

I knew the Eazy Pod was 10000 lph max but thought the Nexus would be higher

I think the 320 is rated to flow 11 or 12000lt/h

Marckoi..as others have said, you need a bit more ooomph.
Your pond is a similar volume to mine, I have 2 20k pumps running about 65%.
Your drum should be able to handle that ok. If you get a decent variable speed 30k pump you can wind it back until you get the desired flow and it’ll run more economically than a smaller pump at full chat for not a lot of extra capital outlay.

    Evolution Aqua

Should have gone for an Aqua Forte DM vario or similar. There was a website for a company in Holland or Germany that were doing them for a really good price and delivery was pretty quick too. I'll see if I can find the link for you if it's not too late. I'm on my phone so can't seem to add links on here.
