Best variable flow pump
Hi all I’ve got a pump feed filter on my pond , at the moment i have a retro bottom drain going to a non return valve then a aquamax 16000 pump but when i stop the pump to clean out the basket the pump will not restart would a new impeller fix this or is it better to buy a new pump . If its a new pump I’d like to buy a variable flow pump but which make of pump is the best for dirty water ,I’ve been looking at the new evolution aqua variable flow 20000 but i cant find any reviews ,I’d be interested in anyone’s advice many thanks gt

I use Superfish which are excellent value for money.
Quick question. I know you said you had a non return valve, but where is the pump sited? in pond or dry mounted.
If its dry mounted, is it below the water line and primed before you are trying to start it after cleaning?

Thanks for your reply i have the non return valve below the water line and the pump dry mounted , i use to run a sequence 15000 but got feed up with cleaning out the pre pump basket so i changed to a aquamax 16000 so i could put bigger holes in the basket

The best Variable speed pump would more likely be a Flow friend or Blue Eco but I have used a Pondexpert Variflow 30000 and its a good pump for the money.
Your main issue is that you are pump feeding your filters so the dirty water is going through the pump. Do you have 4" pipework coming from the pond? If so could you put in a prefilter like a drum or sieve prior to the pump? If its 2" from the retro BD this wouldn't work though.Last edited by pip895; 24-08-2019 at 02:54 PM.
6000g in ground koi pond
+3000g lily/Anoxic pond attached
29 koi (40 to 65cm)
Bottom drain, Mid water & Skimmer to Drum
JBR boichamber->Blue eco 500 pump ->below surface return.
Blue Eco 240 -> Large MB -> Waterfall -> Planted Anoxic pond (25 baskets)

I’ve seen those, but I’d be paying an extra £60 for the same pump!

If it helps, my Aqua Fort DM Vario 20000 after around for years stopped this morning with a fault with the impeller, it’s running again now, replacement being delivered tomorrow at £200.42. Will run the new one then strip the old one down to see if it can be refurbed.

Where did you get the aqua forte from mate?
Sorry, I thought you meant the EA vario. I had a couple of the aqua DM non vario ones a couple of years ago and they lasted a couple of months and ended up just getting my money back. Wouldn’t have them again.

All the pumps seem to be coming out of the same factory, just different, colours, connector, boxes, names. the Blue Eco Pump, looks like the Aqua Forte, Pond Expert and the EA one which I’ve stopped buying, I’ve tested enough of EA’s products for them over the years.

On the kitsu site they are £220, I paid £159 for my jebao, and it’s the same pump.

New Aqua Forte DM20000 arrived and fitted, didn’t change the controller so just a case of unplugging and disconnecting the inlet and outlet, swapped over the pump and all running.
Stripped down the old one expecting it to be a mess, surprisingly clean, impeller clean, just a bit messy around the centre shaft when removed, cleaned it all up, no sign of any wear anywhere, so now boxed up and ready to be used as a spare if needed.
