Koi plus other carp
Hi.
Only have 7 koi in c 22,000 litres so very lightly stocked. Koi are all c 60cm with s few at just over 70cm.
I have always had a passion for mirror carp and common carp from my angling days. I feel I have become quite purist in the hobby only buying Japanese koi and only keeping koi. So am thinking of getting a few larger female mirror/common carp to grow on.
Has as anyone else taken this route? Really I interested to hear others experiences.
Thanks so much.

I don't see the downside in the route you want to take.
If you like mirror carp and want one, get one.
Personally if I had a pond full of 60cm plus Koi I'd be tempted to get a small one so you can enjoy watching it/them grow, and a young one can be tamed to hand feed easily if that's what you like doing.
Obviously make sure you source it from somewhere that has put it through a decent quarantine process before adding to your pond. Maybe ask a Dealer to pick one up for you on a future shipment so it goes through their quarantine process.
I'm someone that could easily end up as a purist, but am trying so hard to avoid it and will be keeping at least one of mine that's a total mutt just because I like it. (Well, nearly all mine are mutts from a purist perspective, but all except a couple are generally true to type/variety).

Interesting idea. Been thinking of growing on some more koi but having sold about 13, which I grew on from 25-35cm tosai because they just didn't' work out for me I think I've got to the point on this one where I would rather buy half decent nisai but then this usually means quite a lot of pennies.

I have mirror, common, fully scaled mirror and leather carp and ghosties too also from angling interest they thrive with the koi my biggest mirror was knocking on 20 lb bust sadly lost her few years ago , my nephews pond has a 20 lb+ mirror called jaws and a 17 lb common, again thriving with the koi

That’s exactly what I’d like to grow. Les Bean who keeps koi and does videos grew a c 45lb mirror carp in 1800 gallons!

I have always had a few Mirrors and they were.....sadly HUGE, lost a few a while back. I am down to one now and its hand tame and great fun so yes add a few non koi. Others I have had are shoal of roach (Phirana when you add food) and orfe. I never knew that orfe can get to nearly 3 foot long they are a big fast fish.
Its your pond dont be swayed by the koi only club.

Go for it mate. I have tench orfs Rudd. Grass carp.
All mixed in with my koi. I was thinking of adding a couple of mirror carp myself.
I enjoy looking at all species of fish.
Do what you want to do. And enjoy it.

I have just done this too. I have a new pond and added some small Koi to it then added the 10 small goldfish from what is now the 'wildlife pond'. Also in there are 2 commons of around 1lb and 5 tiny wee Mirrors. Hand picked by me, choosing only the scaliest ones, one day they will be gorgeous creatures. They are harder to see but the commons are the most gentle fish.

We have just started out and decided on a wildlife pond including common carp, mirror carp and some golden tench for colour. Also 7 small Koi for a splash of colour and that they wouldn't breed like goldfish. So have come to this the other way round. All doing well and although its not a pristine Koi pond it seems to be working well, touch wood, and fry are progressing well, commons, mirror, some ghosties (long story) and baby koi. All mutts and no pedigree but we love them. Will be having a thin out before the real cold weather sets in so if anyone is is up for some fry, preferably not the Koi let me know all approx 1" to 2" long.
Pictures taken from video with iPhone in sandwich bag. They are all shoaled up as feeding time.
Not crystal clear water, which purists appear to love, but all are viewable 3 foot down and plants doing well when mavis the mirror leaves them alone!Last edited by f15hie; 21-08-2019 at 10:44 AM.
When I’m dead I hope my Mrs doesn’t sell my fishing gear for what I told her they cost!

Thanks all for taking time to reply. Great to see others have broader fish taste than just koi. I’ll be looking for a reputable supplier re mirror/ commons. There’s plenty out there. Any advice on this, please do let me know.
thank you.
