Should I narrow my return for a greater current
Hello
After finishing y pond i have noticed the unless i ramp up my superfish RC pump to around 15k I do not gt much of a current in the pond.
My pipework is 2 inch all the way from the pump to the 2 inch gasket i got that is screwed onto the boxweld.
I did it this way to maximise flow and friction.
Im thinking is it because the return is slightly too wide I have to add more power.
This is a cncern as tomorrow i install a draco drum and I will not be able to run 15k flow through it i will have to come down to around 13.
Just wanted to ask everyone as once i solvent weld in that reducer I am committed tot the cause.
thanks
Jim

Perhaps look at fitting a Venturi on your return, this will, up the pressure @ the Venturi , so giving you aireated water & a better flow without changing anything. If you are DIY competent, you could make your own
Good luck!

thanks for the replies but O2 isnt really my problem . just flow and current as I have only one return into the pond. Been thinking about doing a split but I am confident that given the right solution on the one return all will be good thanks

you may think your not getting much flow but you probably are, have you stuck your hand in front of exit to see what its like, you are always better with a couple of returns though not just one, preferably each end of pond on opposing sides of end walls, could you not put your skimmer return (if you have a skimmer) on other end to help return flow,,,andi

hi andi
yea i have the simmer and now that its fired up to 15k its helping along,
didnt have the option due to unique circumstances in the build to do two returns but possible could one day.
there are no dead spots in the pond everything gets moved around even from the corners so perhaps i might just let the system fully establish and see how things are in the coming months.

Surely a reducer would be madness, all that would do is restrict the flow of water.

I have read two threads on here complaining about poor flow from Superfish eco RC pumps.
You didn't mention if yours is the eco model.
One of them sent it back and replaced it with an identical spec Jebao and his flow was significantly greater. He posted a couple of videos demonstrating, it's hard to gauge flow on a video of someone elses pond, but you could see the replacement jebao had a much greater flow at the same setting.

As others have said, flow can be deceiving.
You could attach a pipe to the pond inlet and let it flow into a bucket and time it.

Hello
Decided not to got with it as I have seen yes there is a good current going round the pond . just need to knock back the air in my spindrifter and turned up the skimmer pump a bit.
I think i was just not used to a 2 inch return way below the waterline as most of my last pond was built by a right so and so and its funny how in a way i have got used to the bad installation .
Time to rewire my brain as i hope im now doing things the correct way.
All is well now i hope

glad your sorted, the trick i forgot to mention was milk,if you drop a cupful of milk where return is you can watch it flow, also good for finding holes in a pond,,,,andi

Milk & koi don’t do well!
I had collegue who ran a koi outlet, & someone overnight tipped a bottle of milk into six vats, the result in the morning was ALL DEAD!, he explained that the milk coated the gills & stopped them exchanging ammonia etc.... I’m no expert but that is not just a story (folk law, wives tale) it was true as I helped clean out the tanks the next day.

I checked my return flow by tying a long piece of white wool to a stick and holding in front of the return.
Not exactly high tech but gives you some idea of the flow.
