Aerated bottom drain or not???
I'm trying to decide whether or not to put a aerated drain in the new pond or not, I've been to 2 koi dealers today that said not to bother, I probably would only have it on at night if I did put one in anyway but it seems odd that dealers are swaying me to get the cheaper standard drain

I’d put one in, you’d be hard pushed to retro fit one but can always turn it off if you don’t need/like it.

Agree with BCC. Mine is part of my system to move crud around the bottom of pond
Tied in with the TPRs. Also works well to get surface crap to the skimmer.
Like BCC said easy to turn off.

Up to you really Sep,I have never had one but they say they are good at pulling in the crap.
I have an ordinary £20 bottom sump one and it's fine, reason being I didn't want air in the pond as it prefare a calmer effect on the surface.
My pond has a gentle circular movement made from my 4 ins just under water return which makes loads of oxygen and then skimmed so the surface is clear.John

Well I did want one just for extra air at night but both places I went only had negative things to say like, they block with film and algae, they kill air pumps and mess up water clarity because of suspended fines

Here is a photo 3 1/2 years that's been running. And still the same as when I started. As in the dome side of things.
I suppose if you stopped it for say a month
It could block. But there is ways around that. Just put a pressure washer on a pole
With handle trigger taped. And clean it.
And if like my pond it's to deep. Just drop some water out until you can reach it.
Easy peasy.
On the air pump side of things if you set it up right. With air bleeders built in. Should last a long time.
I have an air pump that's 10 years old on my nexus.
I can also see where John is coming from as well. When I had my air on a timer.
6 hrs on 6 hrs off. I loved the calmness of the water. When it was off.
I just turn it off when I want that affect

That's true, I like that pressure washer idea. Is there a difference between a spindrifter and the ones with the rubber membrane?

I've had two entry level Hailea pumps running constantly for 5+ years now and my DIY aerated BD has never blocked ... the only thing that kills pumps is a badly designed air system and too much backpressure ...
Decided to have a go at DIY'ing my own slotted membrane diffuser (like a spindrifter) with some bits and pieces I had lying about ... nearly finished ... be interesting to see how it works ...

Will do .... I've made the membrane from a piece of 1mm EPDM liner I had spare (same stuff but don't think it will be as flexible as the spindrifter membrane) but it will be interesting to see. These membrane diffusers with 100's of holes (or even better slots) should be far more free flowing and present far less backpressure than air ring or many other types of diffusers.
Just waiting on some M3 fine thread machine screws to hold the membrane clamping ring down ...

yep nice swaying movement..mines actually on now...I was the numpty that didn’t solvent weld the stem first time...so after a drain down, temp pool and refill I have a fixed bottom drain lid and working spindrifter...after 5 years! So that’s a firm recommendation stick the stems in!
