I think the problem with the original hose is just that it is a cheap Gardena? one so may just try replacing it with another bit and see what happens when it is left under pressure in the hot weather then go from there with ideas people have given me.

The trouble with leaving a garden hose permanently full of water that you eventually trickle into pond is that toxic chemicals will leach into the water in the hose which is why there are warnings on garden hoses that they shouldn't be used for drinking water.
If you use a garden hose for filling or topping up a pond at the full flow rate, there is no danger because the water isn't in the hose for long enough to leach these toxic chemicals provided you run the hose for a minute or so to wash out anything that has leached into the water that has remained in it since it was last used. If you plan to use the hose for a slow trickle as and when needed, it would be safer to use MDPE or a food grade hose.

That makes sense thanks for the heads up
Basically the hose is only connected between the meter and the filter so only about 1m of garden hose is used and the rest is John Guest? 15mm speed fit so how does that sound to you Syd? The hose I use to top up the pond using ST or similar doesn't get fed via the filter. Hope that makes sense? If I use the hose to top the pond I try to run it a bit before using it on the pond.

If it's only 1m of hose, I wouldn't worry about leaching because it isn't really long enough for water to be in it for sufficient time to leach anything significant but, if you're paranoid (like me) and you have a specialist supplier of hose and other flexible pipework near you, you can get a metre of hose that will, not only, be food grade but will be designed to last years will under full mains pressure.

I may need to have a rethink as the water does sit in the meter of hose for a few days between top ups sometimes so that could be an issue couldn't it?

It all depends on how long the water stays in the hose and whether that amount of water makes up a significant percentage of the water you use on any one occasion. In my situation I don't have a hose feeding my purifier and then on to an automatic top up but, if I had a metre of ordinary hose anywhere in that system I wouldn't worry because water wouldn't stay in it for sufficient time when it tops up on average for a few minutes every day.
However my paranoia aways says "if you need peace of mind then you're better safe than sorry". For the sake of sourcing a metre of food grade hose you won't be lying awake at night and wondering. So what would you prefer, a one-off couple of hours Googling and ringing around now or a couple hours each night alternately punching the pillow and wandering over to the bedroom window to look out at the pond in terror?
