How Many Koi do you have in what pond volume?

Sorry to anyone sick of this type of thread which do come round once in a while but I've not seen one in ages!
Now I'm fully stocked I'm interested to know what others have.

The final question combined with the filtration question 'might' just give a clue as to whether stocking densities / level of filtration are proportional to health problems.

    Questions to copy/paste are:

Pond capacity in litres / gallons:
    How many koi over 30cm:
    How many koi under 30cm:
    How many non-koi:
    Main filtration unit:
Have you had to treat for parasites/bacterial infections (exc. injuries) in the last 12 months, if so, how many times:
    Heated/unheated:
Approx water change % per Week/Month:
    Age of Pond:

    My answers are:

    Pond capacity in litres / gallons: 12,000 / 2600
How many koi over 30cm: 5
How many koi under 30cm: 7
    How many non-koi: 0
    Main filtration unit: Nexus 220
Have you had to treat for parasites/bacterial infections (exc. injuries) in the last 12 months, if so, how many times: 3 times
    Heated/unheated: Unheated
Approx water change % per Week/Month: Minimum 10% Week (average over the year)
    Age of Pond: 18 Months

Pond capacity in litres / gallons: measured as
24.000L - from this 19.500L is the former in the ground pool (depth 130cm, 5m L x 3m W) converted in 2008 into pond by adding 4.500 L shallow natural heavily planted zone around two sides.

    How many koi over 30cm:
    15

    How many koi under 30cm:
    5

    How many non-koi:
12 gold fish I was not able to fish out prior introducing koi some years ago.

    Main filtration unit:
2x Easy Drums - one on retrofit bottom drain, second on skimmer line. All biofilters DIY - AF with 18 baskets, MBF - 600L IBC tank with 200L of 12mm Helix, 4x 300L shower filters - two with Ogata Crystal Bio, two with 17mm Helix, 2x Denitrifying Combo with 100L of 17mm Helix. Pond turnover slightly under 1h.

I am probably "overfiltered" - but I really like DIY projects and could not stop - needed to try to build all the biofilters - replacing original EazyPod and Nexus 220 I was not really happy with.

Never needed to treat for anything - no salt ever used....use harvested rain water for drums cleaning and trickle in - run it at KH 3-5, pH 7 - 7.2 - only chemicals ever added - soda bicarbonate when KH drops to 3 - to bring it back to 5.

Hope this helps How Many Koi do you have in what pond volume?

Also use Seneye - mainly though as info on if everything runs well in my pumped setup, Oase 6 in 1 test stick (initially daily, than weekly and now 2x per month) but weekly check pH and KH with Sera drop tests - given my desire to run my pond with low KH (3-5) and pH near 7.

Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk

    Added info:
Pumps total capacity : 2x AF DM Vario 30.000 (1 on skimmer line and 1 on BD line), 1x Aquaking FTP2 20.000 on ASHP line - total pumped 70.000 L/h setup but after head losses max flow can be only about 35.000 L/h - but do not use it all - both DM Vario pumps are trimmed down - bottom drain line to 70% and skimmer line to 60% - so final true flow is about 25.000 L/h giving slightly under 1h pond turnover rate.

Water change - varied - since May till SEP about 30% per week as I use pond water for daily garden irrigation - topping it up automatically with harvested rain water. OCT - APR - about 5% per week based on water parameters - low nitrates (under 20 mg/L at all time) thanks to AF and de-nitrifying combo.

Heated pond - not really but tempered with 5kW ASHP

Regime - I keep 15 dC until night freeze arrives (Late NOV typically), than stop regular feeding, switch off skimmer line, ASHP line and turn down bottom drain line to about 60% of output on its AF DM Vario 30.000 pump and start pond tempering set at 7 dC to filters from heat exchanger on our house central heating it takes about 2 -3 weeks for pond to drop down to 7dC - keep it there all winter till warmer days arrive (typically mid March) - than restart ASHP set for 15dC, crank up the house heating to filters to 15dC as well and in about 5 - 7 days pond gets to 15dC. May - increase to 18 dC, June till September keeping it tempered to 21dC, October down to 18dC, November down to 15dC.

So I am not trying to heat but temper our pond to minimize heat swings causing big stress to koi - weakening their immune system pawing the way for pathogens to have upper hand. By tempering our pond I believe their immune system keeps all koi healthy thus no need to treat against any pathogen outbreaks - so far - knocking the wood.

I would put my info on here but I think it would kick something off lol.

All I will say is it like some other ponds is over stocked and under sized but the water parameters are pretty much spot on and don't have much in the way of problems with parasites although I did have some Flukes 2 or 3 years ago which were sorted thanks to a single dose of Flukesolve. Famous last words. All things considered I must be doing something right or I'd be constantly treating the pond for one thing or another wouldn't I?

How Many Koi do you have in what pond volume?

    Pond capacity in litres/gallons(uk) - 10230/2250

    How many koi above 30cm - 14

    How many other carp above 30cm - 2 (1x mirror 1x ghost)

How many koi below 30cm - none

How many non koi - 4 (1x tench above 30cm, 2x rudd and a crucian carp below 30cm)

Main filtration - retro BD pump fed QK22 drum into a large 8 foot multi bay with various medias.

How many illnesses in the last year - absolutely zero issues.

How old is the pond - this one is 4 years 9 months -half my fish stock is at least or well over 10 years old

P.s - i think the ponds age/maturity has a huge indicator in this topic to what you are trying to work out from it bud. Ie you will probably find most ponds with most issues are still in their infancy (2years)

Some of my bio media is getting on for 10 year old

    EDIT AGAIN

My heads not with it today ha ha I’ve edited this post 3 times now How Many Koi do you have in what pond volume? bloody forget my own fish ha ha. posted then went for a smoke at the pond and thought hang on i didnt include my sanke’s in that post or the kujaku ffs.

How many koi over 30cm: 5
How many koi under 30cm: 2
How many non-koi: 7 orange ghosties
Main filtration unit: Nexus 220 and Cetus
Have you had to treat for parasites/bacterial infections (exc. injuries) in the last 12 months, if so, how many times: no, but did salt to 0.3% going into winter.

The ghosties are all around 20cm - these were my 'suicide' fish when starting the pond. I'd like to get shot of them, they eat like a horse and have doubled in size in 18 months, but they're impossible to catch. They do nothing for me but ironically nine times out of ten whenever friends come round they say something like "Oooo I like those shiny orange ones..."

I also run a 4kw ASHP, I maintained 17C until late November, then switched it off and let it drop to ambient over winter. Switched back on in March, heating up to 15C as quickly as possible. When it got hot a couple of weeks ago I cranked it up to 20C which I'm starting to regret!

Constant trickle-in of around 100ml a minute which equates to 1000L a week.

How Many Koi do you have in what pond volume?

This made me stop & think, how many over/under 30cm? Not a question I could easily answer? So had to go out & count them!

Pond capacity 8,000 UK gallons—-36,400 Litres
    > 60cm 7
    > 30cm 8
    < 30cm 6
    Not Koi. 0
Old school four bay filter ( includes moving k1 bed)
Additional skimmer over double (DIY) Bakki/trickle shower
No problems with parasites minor bacterial. (See below)
    All inside a Polytunnel. 365/24/7

Edit I had a nagging doubt, so checked up! I did have a Fluke problem, followed by Costia last July 18 so I was wrong! Sorry

    Update Edit 26/6/19

    Pond is 13 years mature?
No electric or gas heating, but small DIY Solar panel.
    As previous said inside a 20ft x 18ft polytunnel?
No trickle in/out, but weekly 10% water change (Summer)
    More like 10% monthly (Autumn/Winter)

I have no idea what a mixiflop is and neither does google!

    I'm pretty sure they're bog-standard ghosties - I got 10 for £30 from a local aquatic centre...
