    "Lunking"

So I was reading some articles last night trying to further my knowledge of fishkeeping and came across a term I've never heard before, "lunking". I tried Google but it just kept coming up with threads with the term. So can a gone explain what this is or have a video of what happens?

its when they come up the top, gulp air and then swim down blowing it out through the gills, can be caused by a few things, maybe a gill irritation like flukes, or if the water needs more oxygen, I have also noticed mine might do it after a treatment.

I think I remember reading that nitrite in the water can cause it too.

I've been conscious of "lunking" for at least three years now ...

Never koi doing it though just goldfish, always just when the water starts to warm back up over 10oc ... got one doing it just now .. that I've scraped 3 x in the last 3 weeks (2 x external scrapes and 1 x internal gill scrape) ... basically nothing parasitic at all on any of them now or in the past (all other fish and pond parameters are spot on too ... defo zero NO2)...

This fish has some obvious bacterial discomfort around the belly scales ... so I'm guessing the "lunking" high out of the water is trying to purge the belly irritation ... I've always been ushered towards gill problems in the past for lunking and never found anything so maybe it's always been early season bacterial irritation ...

Was it male or female ?

I also always thought it must be some kind of gill irritation but the one getting treated just now is definitely bacterial irritation on it's belly ... but still doing the same lunking action to try and relieve it ...

Was a male fish, but there was nothing wrong with the other fish after numerous scrapes and water quality tests. The fish did it for two years before I sold it on. If something is wrong with the Fish as you say then this may be the problem.

    Cheers
