Drum questions
Hello
Starting work on the new pond next week.
Im after a drum to sit in my vortex filter and so far budget wise the draco drum is looking best.
coupla questions though .
when they state maximum flow rate is that in order to be effective
also is draco the only model that will go in a vortex ( slightly submerged)
for drums that require a pump for cleaning how do you plug that in the sequence
thanks
Jim

I believe a Draco is the only drum available for this scenario.
Your best bet would be to ring Tony at Draco and have a chat with him, he’s a decent lad

thanks we have spoken so all is well . just wondering that the slightly cheaper option of their drum will exceed my traget flow rate though
im confused as they all take 4 inch inlets so how does the max flow get exceeded?

You’re pump fed and concerned that the drum will have “too much” capacity is that right?

Cool, what volume of water and what sort of configuration is your (presumably) multibay/vortex?
I think Familyman was running something like this prior to ripping it all out?

yep
i have one of those proline multibays where the vortex is connected to the multibay.
theres a video on you tube showing the draco drum connected to one of these in the vortex .

Deffo Familyman’s old setup.
Might be worth dropping him a PM or wait til he pops up on here.
From what I recall, the only real issue was getting enough flow through the multibay. They’re not designed for that.
They’re more “slow and steady”.
The Draco will work just fine though, it’ll boil down to whether your existing filter will do the job you want it to I suppose.

thanks mate
for what its worth currently running 12k through it and everything has been fine for years. Its just i am extending the pond to 6000 gallons.
With current flow it would be turnover of 2 hours but ideally id like it at 1.5 hours
Have a queni koi shower on my setup too which runs at 15k so hopefully filtration will not be my biggest concern
thanks

Hhmmm realistically I think a multibay is gonna struggle mate with that much water unless it’s HUGE!
More water usually equates to more fish
Can your current MB cope with 6000g/hr?

Tony makes the Draco in N.Wales and I have the solum 25 stand alone.
Have a look on his website Tom.John

yeah the multibay worked with the draco to a degree, but as said it just couldn't flow enough, i also doubt it would have held enough bio now my fish are getting big, and I wouldnt put water thats not been pre filtered very well over the shower, so the only option to answer all my needs was a drum, my pond is 5500 gallons.
Both my b.d and skimmer now feed the drum, which feeds bio chamber, 2 pumped returns, 1 is entirely flowed over the shower, the other is partial flowed over the shower, with the excess water going through the wall to circulate the pond.
You will never turn over 6k gallons hourly running through a draco in your vortex, it just cant do it. If you want to use a draco I think you would have to go for a solum 25 with multiple entry feeds, run all your water through that and all your filters from that, tbh though I was in this position and everybody told me to go bigger because the solum 25 on a 6k gallon pond is getting to the limits of its capabilities, hence i went for a 35 k flow.

Just taken a look, I like them to, think I've found the drum I want the Solum16 will probably suit my needs, pity the Bio tank is on small side, seems its only suitable for 4000 gallons, all being well Im hoping my pond will be around 3500, so the bio tank is probably to small for my needs?

Hi mate. I have a draco drop in.
Inside my 320 nexus. For me a brilliant bit of kit.
Tony was brill to.
Best think i bought for the pond.
And you could nt get better help anywhere.
Why don t you pm tony and ask if he can help you in what you want on the bio side of things.

Hi Tom, my pond is 3000 gals and I use the solum 25 with two pumps.
Agree with Familyman but his pond is a lot bigger and he needed the bigger drum which worked for him.
When I went to see Tony at Draco with the intention of getting the 16,but came away with the 25 and now so glad I did.
Got a good deal and it runs perfectly.
I think the 16 is too small and the bio is as well.
You maybe better getting a drop in one for a vortex stand alone then on to a large bio, maybe your mate could make you one.John

Hi familyman
glad you have jumped i on this post as you have had the setup I am going to use. To be fair to my system though i am not going to run 6000 gallons and hour through it.
My skimmer will be on a sieve 15k litres an hour to my queni koi shower .
My draco when i by the origin in the vortex with have about 14k liters an hour through it so the multibay is turning the pond over ever 1 hour 50 mins or so.
any thoughts?
thanks
( currently got 12k litres an hour running through the multibay with brushes in the vortex)

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
