    Koi outlet

Im a bit puzzled and hopefully someone who knows more than me can help

I went to a koi outlet on Saturday that has had confirmed KHV last year.
What is required of them from DEFRA or CEFAS as for cleaning their vats and premises to allow them to restock and start selling koi again.
The place i went to, their vats looked like they could do with a good scrub and repaint.
Doesnt look like they have been done in years

If it is within a premises then full disinfection is required. As well as disinfecting tanks some go as far as replacing pumps and pipework for additional certainty, I believe there is no need for additional monitoring by CEFAS if this has taken place.

If it is something like a lake I think there's different options to disinfection (I guess culling all stocks and removing anything that could potentially be a host) followed by a 4 year monitoring programme.

It also depends on the outlet - There is an outlet not far from you that had a KHV outbreak, but I don't think it made it as far as the retail tanks. This particular outlet often has diseased fish for sale so I guess they are not being monitored.

As much as i would like some new fish this year, I don't think I would take the gamble. Although I don't own any million £ champions, putting the fish i currently own at risk is something I don't want to do. I purchased them because I like them, I don't care what others think.

If its Swallow Aquatics then all I can say is their fish are often unhealthy and they always appear short staffed and lacking in knowledge. (That is based on branches I've visited so that's not necessarily a blanket statement).

However as far as KHV are concerned, they did follow protocol (had no choice really) and FHI approved everything prior to re-stocking.

As someone who is still building their collection, I am happy to buy new fish from Dealers who I know quarantine to the highest standards. I'll probably feel different in the future once my collection is mature.

Thats the one. Their tanks looked well overstocked and grotty
