What do other halfs think about your Koi hobby?
The story about my wife's journey into understanding Koi and Pond ownership came to a conclusion today, so here's my story.
1) Announcing you want a Koi Pond.
16 years in a flat having always had fish tanks since before meeting her. She knew that I previously had ponds and accepted the fact that one day when we have a house I would want one. No problems, no arguments, it was just accepted.
2) Being in a viable position to build a Koi Pond
Finally moved into a house with a nice size garden (for the South East at least). Asked her where would be best to put the planned pond. "What Pond" came the reply. Not allowed to even discuss having a pond until the house is renovated. We bought a dump, so this will take years.
3) Persuading her to give the go-ahead
Built a double garage as we needed a home for my car and additional storage space....this is where the secret pond equipment purchases started. The garden was still a bomb site and this is where I initiated a plan..... I'll fix up this half of the garden to my taste, and you do what you want with the other, sunnier half.
4) The Pond Build.
A 7000 litre hole in the ground was enough to encourage feedback... "Looks like an asteroid has hit it" / "How much did this/that cost?" / "Are you planning on keeping a bloody Whale?" / "You've taken up almost the whole garden"
5) The finished pond.
"Now you've got your bloody pond how about you sort out the patio" / "When are you going to do the kitchen/bathroom/bedroom/living room?" (delete as appropriate) / "Surely this is going to hit the electric/water bill"
6) Acceptance
"Well, if you want me to feed them while your working away, I should probably have a Koi too"
7) 6 Months after getting her first Koi
"There's too many Koi in there and my one isn't going to grow properly" / "Why are you throwing the food in the direction of your Koi, what about mine, she's hungry too"
8) Permission to extend the pond to 12,000 litres
"There's not enough room in there for my Koi to grow to its potential"
And all of this culminated into the climax that was today's text message conversation. A full copy of which is here for all to see....
My messages are the green ones.... pushing my luck for a 2nd "wildlife pond" I messaged her a news article that popped up on my phone, and the responses were going exceptionally well, until I stepped a little bit too far over the mark....

Haha brill. Great write up.
My over half.
When suggested a new pond. And cost.
My wife laughed. And told me to piss off.
Then i had to find a new strategy.
So i got some photos of ponds paving
Windows in ponds. Summer house.
edited
it all into one photo.
Then put the bribe into the equation.
Just think your in the summer house. Laid there in a hottub. A couple of beers. And your relaxing looking at the fish.
BINGO
Fred got his new pond.
And she got her hottub.
Now thats what i call a compromise
Haha.
Get in there. And she calls me a soft lad. Hahaha.
Now and again while i am sat in the conservatory. Grinning. She says what. You grinning at. Your up to something. IF ONLY SHE KNEW.
Fred

Yes I know but in my defence she was sitting almost next to me the day the company rang up to say they would be delivering the tank the next day which she questioned but didn't follow up fortunately. But as there is currently no water in it if the worst comes to the worst it's not impossible to get rid of it should it come to it

Full it up with water and get the QT running with fish in it.
When she sees it just say it's been there for years and she was there when you ordered it, then twist the conversation around and ask her why she never takes an interest in your stuff and never even bothered coming to look at it when you built it in 2015.

Luckily wife had them before I meet her it was her that get me on to them tbf . But when it came to do a new pond didn't like every size I came up with as it toke all garden up so no play room for little one . Little one should be in the fields like I always was and let me have a proper pond at least twice what I got that didn't go down well Haha

My other half knows very little about fish but seems to know that they need feeding no matter how cold the weather is
I keep telling her that they don't eat when the temperature drops below a certain level.
If it was down to her they would be fed 30 times a day and probably get more than we eat in a day ourselves, then she would wonder why the water is very cloudy and the fish were not looking too happy then think she must be under feeding them and chuck some more food in LOL

My missus let me have the pond no arguments, in fact she said the house is mine but the garden is yours. Now 4 years later all she says is you spend all and every weekend playing with the bloody pond, we don't do anything lol. But when her friends come over, it's "are you not going to the pond" !!!

we started out with aquarium coldwater fish 20 years back, then her brother gave us a white koi,and it grew, and grew so we went looking at more koi, then we needed a pond,1500g first one with a totally inadequate hozelock bioforce 9000 filter and a yamitsu 9000 in pond pump, then over the years we got more koi and needed more room, mine loves buying small ones i like the bigger ones, she loves nothing more than sitting watching them in garden in summer, and will feed them, she even years ago used to clean my multibay out, even the japmat lol,as for the money well, weve just spent about £5.5k on new pond and she helped me where she could so i think that says it all,now everytime someone comes to house shes loves showing them her pond, but dont ask her how drums or nexus works lol,,,,,andi

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
