Thread: Air in ponds

Would the water push it's way through the diffuser and up the air pipe?, depending on the air pump location it could fill with water?

I have air in the filter as i have moving K1 but still have airstones in the Jap Matt sections. I took out my air ring out of the last chamber as it dropped the performance of my main pump which i beleive to be from cavitation form the bubbles in the last chamber as it was a bit fizzy.
also have a waterfall fed via skimmer after a tower with 12k and hour going over bakki shower and pumice media.
Have an air ring on the bottom drain and if i switch that off the water is no where near as clearer as when it is on.
in total i have 80 litres per hour in the filter . 60 litres per hour to the bottom drain.
i also have my return from the main so that the water circulates round as my pond is oval shaped. The fish like to swim against the current and i think it helps the pond act as one big vortex for getting rid of the muck.
you could just get a eco 50 litre per hour pump and a few stones in the filter. That way you have air going in but it will not be visable in your pond. keeping the water calm.
Hope that helps.

ive got 2 spindrifters and a shower return, spindrifters were both being run off 1 hiblow 40 and i turned them off yesterday, reason being my water is crap,to say im running each bd to its own drum my clarity isnt that good,i think the airflow was keeping the crud suspended, will see how it goes over next few days, but not worried about air as putting 20k over shower to a 6" drop so lots of agitation going on,plus i got told showers oxygenate water as it goes through anyway,,,andi

I don't run my BD air all the time. But if you have it you need to be turning it on at least a couple of times a day or your membrane will block.
Oxygen is a temperature dependant issue- once tempos start going over 20C (or you are heated) or putting in an oxygen depleting treatment such as formalin, PP or some blanketweed treatments filter circulation alone might not be enough. But it depends on your pond surface area to fish metabolic load ratio as well as flow rates.
Don't forget that an air pump does not actually put oxygen in the water, it just increases the rate at which 'new' water comes into contact with the surface, therefore allowing more gas transfer in both directions. Increasing this also reduces CO2, which in turn increases pH which can be a bit of a pain.
*Just a reminder that anyone with sturgeon or sterlets needs to be running their pond at a consistently higher oxygen level than we need for koi.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

the water will come into air pipe if no air in it,always better to fit a non return valve in your airline,i dont and it does take a few seconds to push water back out when i turn air on,looks like im fitting a timer on mine thanks feline lol, andi

Thanks for every ones comments all really helpful and eye openers as always . Am thinking timer switch on all night and a couple hours over the day when I know we are not going to be about any way . With temp and thunder storms I'll just over ride the timer and I didn't even think about treatments . Airpump is set above water lever but a few coppers for a non return is a good shout . Cheers again people I love this forum.

I use tetra for air test. don't know how accurate they are compared to a gadget tester. the colour chart is not the best

I was using a Tetra O2 kit as that's what I was recommended by Lee Burrows as that's what he uses.
Not sure if it was something specific to my water chemistry or the way I clean out my test kits but after Lee tested my water and got a reading of 8 or 9 mgl I tested it a couple of days later and got a reading of 11 mgl then after using aqua source blanket resolve the reading dropped down to 2mgl and a couple of days late went up to 5 mgl and stayed at that reading until I decided to stop testing for O2 as no mater where I tested or how I tested I couldn't get any different reading and even followed Manky Sanke's advice to test the kit by using a tub of aerated boiled and filtered tap water and a tub of aerated pond water - both results every time were 5 mgl even after trying 2 other Tetra O2 kits from different supplies to make sure I had'd got a bad batch. I bought a JBL? O2 kit but haven't got round to trying it out yet.
I will have a word with Lee and see if he can do a pond health check once the weather picks up and see what results for O2 he gets as that may answer my question about either the kits or my methods being the problem.
I was looking for an O2 pen type tester but they are big money for anything worth having. At the end of the day with a depleted O2 level the fish will react and let you know there's an issue so for now I would probably just keep testing for the main things and wait to see what happens if I can get Lee back round as it's always better for a second opinion as you tend to get blinkered into the way you do things sometimes and end up doing something wrong without realising it.
So I personally wouldn't make any decisions at the moment either for or against the Tetra O2 kits until I see something to either prove me right or wrong.

Thanks Roy, at first I put it down to the blanket weed treatment but then Makey Sanke said about the 2 tub testing method and I was still getting the same results I thought to save money and wasting too much more time to try another kit at first then hold off from testing O2 until I could get some answers that I could rely on.

Just realised my mistake JBL make speakers so the O2 kit could be JLB? I'll have to check later as that doesn't look right either
