    How to transport koi?

    Hi All,
I'm moving house soon and will need to transport my koi to a temporary pond (another thread on that!). I need to move them over 200 miles, so realistically they need to be happy for 6 hours+ in transit. I don't have any oxygen but could get bags. Anyone have advice on moving them? How do people usually transport to shows?
I'm thinking I can stick them in koi bags like dealers do, but then without oxygen would they be ok for 6 hours? My other option is I have an inverter which means I can run an air pump from the car lighter socket. I could put the koi in some kind of tank and run air into it the whole journey. I have 12 koi to move, between 30 and 50cm. Can do it in a couple of trips if necessary...
    Any tips?
    Thanks,
    Matt

I would say you definitely need some sort of oxygen whether it be oxygen in the bag or an air stone. If you are feeding I would avoid feeding them for a couple of days before as well so that they aren’t producing much waste. These fish are transported all the way from japan in bags with some oxygen in it so as long as they are packed well in a box or a rubber washing basket which is what I use then they should be fine mate

From near Twickenham to Lancashire. I'm sure it would cost a fortune to get someone else to do it.
Anyone know if there's an easy way of getting oxygen in bags at home?

Someone else asked this question not so long ago.
I once moved some large koi from my sisters home in Chelmsford to N.Wales some 230 mls.
Before doing anything at her home I contacted a dealer in N London just off the m25 to see if he would oxygen the bags for me which he agreed to do for £20 for 6 bags if I brought them to him.
Koi are ok to travel for about 1hr in a bag with air,so I caught them up and took them to him to oxygenate the bags and continued on to N Wales no problem.
Maybe you could do a similar thing.
    John

I found my modified thousand-liter flo-bin on the back of a trailer or open back truck an ideal way of transporting my fish up to the show.
750 liters of their pond water in the tank with a 40-watt air pump, an inverter and a couple of 200 mm flat air stones. A perfectly comfortable ride. No crowding with 12 fish.
The mod was, I cut a square lid with rounded corners out of the top of the tank which bolted back on the top of the opening with the two existing cross braces to the main skeleton frame. Cut the opening big enough to lower the fish in with a sock net and catch and remove on arrival. The contours of the plastic lid are molded in such a way if you look at it and mark it creates a comfortable hatch.cover.
The battery, inverter, and air pump arrangement give you built in safety for a short stopover with all the air churning over...
I would pick up power directly off the battery terminals
You don't need a fuse blowing the supply power to the cigarette lighter.
I used a 40watt air pump because I owned one.

MAKE SURE YOU FIX THE BALL VALVE CLOSED AND LOCKED.
DON"T WANT IT DRIBBLING OUT FOR 6 HOURS.

moved up and dow. the m1 a few times, starve them for a few days prior to reduce waste in the water, big bags, with corners taped if not fish bags, at least double bagged and only have the minimum water you can get away with, and plenty of fresh air trapped in the rest of the bag if you can not get any 02.

they can and do get shipped all over the world and are in transport for far longer than you will be so plan a route that avoids excessive bumps, if there is a longer but no sleeping policeman for instance, keep them in the dark and be very gentle with the acclimatisation at the other end,
