Gas Exchange. breather gaps needed?
Hi All
I have just installed a 3kw heater and its eating through the electric. I have 62mm poly carb over the pond but have quite a few gaps due to temporary hoses running in and out of the pond stopping the sheets sitting flush. I am taking steps to improve insulation by taping up my open poly carb ends and routing the hoses through the side so the poly carb can sit flat with no caps. The gap between water and sheets is about 30 cm which I understand is adequate for Gas exchange but do i need to allow a gap to exist to the outside atmosphere? I don't want heat to escape.! The water is aerated in the filter.
Second question, Has anyone got any ideas for insulating an old school single line 4 bay cloverleaf filter? I am building a filter house which will be insulated however its not ready and temp has plummeted so a temporary jacket to go over the whole lot would be ideal...any ideas?
Thanks!

that twin wall foiled bubble wrap is pretty good stuff.
Personally i dont think you need to think about leaving deliberate air gaps for gas exchange, especially with 300mm air gap above the water, it would be very difficult to make it air tight even if you tried.
Even the slightest gap anywhere will allow fresh air in.

For the filter and exposed pipe work bubble wrap and duck tape.
You will not beable to totally seal up the poly carbonate enclosure, heating can get expensive.
what tempreture are you at ??
