Raising pump, or using a mid position drain in winter?
I picked up some books cheap recently.
One that's from 1989 refers to the use of a mid position drain to be used in winter and the bottom drain turned off.
Also refers to lifting the pump from the bottom if it's a pumped pond.
I haven't seen that in more recent material,
is it just an out dated idea, or is worthwhile??

That's what I had figured.
I can see the thinking behind it of not cooling the pond,
Is the reason it's out dated for proper filtration?

it's related to thinking that the deeper the water the warmer it will be. Raising your pump will leave the deeper water undisturbed and somewhere for your fish to keep warm.

Simon - check Manky Sanke's great website with a lot of most relevant info on koi keeping - link to his article on temperature stratification - Good water guide: pt 6
Logic in the old school on placing pumps higher or using mid water drain only was assuming that this way the 4dC heaviest water layer at the bottom will not be disturbed - but this is wrong assumption - as if there is any flow of water out and into the pond, sooner or later it mixes up all water in the pond anyway - especially in rather shallow typical koi ponds.
The only real reason for lifting pump from the bottom in pumped setup is to prevent all water being pumped out of pond in case of any failure - but this is required only if no other system controlling water level in the pond is installed.
If you have water level sensor capable to shut down your pump when water would drop too much, keep your pump on the bottom w/o any problems - however when you keep your pump and filters running all the time whole winter - as also Manky explains on his web site why this is desirable - you will need to compensate for heat losses by heating your pond water to desired temperature - even if only to keep 5dC in your pond as most economical option - with much more heat needed if you want to keep it above Aeromonas alley - but this is different topic alltogether.Last edited by milaz; 10-01-2019 at 08:21 PM.
You get what you pay for - or better - what you make yourself.
