Ibc quarantine, holding tank
I have an ibc that I want to set up as a holding tank.
From reading other posts I take it that the tank needs to be constantly in use for it to mature.
My plan is to put it behind a raised wall at the back of the pond. Then have the water constantly flowing through it and back to the pond via a box filter.
I have various pumps and a garage full of pipes.
When it comes to using it as a separate tank, just drop the pump in it and put the filter on top so it's isolated but everything is mature.
Does this sound reasonable, or stupid?

yes sounds good, I suppose you will just have to p.p the quarantine before you connect it back up to the pond again each time.
Probably a minimal risk of transferring parasites doing that, but regarding k.h.v it might be a bit close for comfort ….dunno.

why not just have it as a seperate entity if you already have a seperate filter and pump for it,thing is if one of your koi gets something like flukes in the pond then its safe to say the flukes or whatever will also be in your holding tank, safer to have it not using pond water, you could seed your filter box with some media from your pond filters if possible to mature quicker and just keep a few goldfish in it to keep filters ticking over when not in use, also be careful of what has been in ibc, vince on here almost wiped his pond out after using an ibc as a filter which had been used for pva glue, even though he cleaned thoroughly as he heated his pond the warm water dissolved toxins that hadnt come away during cleaning, andi

Yes keeping it always separate is better for the reasons above.
It would be separate if in use.
I suppose the thinking behind it was if it was linked to the main pond the bigger volume would help to stabilise it.
I have been looking for a tank local for a while that seemed suitable. It had a food grade product, that on researching I found one of the uses is as a preservative in bait for carp fishing, so figured it should be ok.
Monopropylene gylcol. If that's no good let me know before I fit it!Last edited by Simon Fish; 04-01-2019 at 04:07 PM. Reason: Spelling
