Aerated bottom drain or weighted diffuser

What if any is the difference between using a fixed air dome on bottom drain or a good weighted diffuser in pond I have an aerated bottom drain but my mate as a Richdon koi weighted diffuser he uses this because if he ever has an issue with membrane on air diffuser he can clean or replace without the hassle of getting someone to dive in pond my diffuser on my drain as been no problem but think it could do with replacing getting big bubbles every now again if you know what I mean and thinking of just getting one like his that’s not fixed in place

I get big bubbles occasionally - I am pretty sure it is air leaking out from the thread that then collects under the drain cover and escapes periodically. I love donning snorkel and mask and getting in the pond only not at this time of year!

You want the air lift to be on top of the drain ideally to pull the muck in towards it. Also with a drop in drain you will have the air line trailing in the pond which I don't like personally. Having a drop in aerator available is sensible though in case of failure at inconvenient times of year.
    6000g in ground koi pond
    +3000g lily/Anoxic pond attached
    29 koi (40 to 65cm)
Bottom drain, Mid water & Skimmer to Drum
JBR boichamber->Blue eco 500 pump ->below surface return.
Blue Eco 240 -> Large MB -> Waterfall -> Planted Anoxic pond (25 baskets)

Having had a couple of fixed bottom drain diffusers over the years, I would certainly not have them again. They are a real pain if and when they become blacked or covered in weed etc. Getting into my pond or draining down just to change a simple air stone/dome is not what I want to do.

I now have two 200mm dia air discs at each end of the pond, connected with weighted air tubing which lies around the very bottom edges of the pond. I can also move them around if need be, for best results.

Now I know some are going to say Oh! they look unsightly and collect debris etc. Well you can't see mine unless you look hard, as the tubing lays exactly where its placed, in my case around the very bottom edges. I haven't noticed my tubing harbouring any amount of mulm etc and if it did all you have to do is move it out a bit with a net handle and it will very quickly disperse....still better than getting in a cold pond with a wet suit and a divers helmet Lol

So that is my feeling about it, but to make it work weighted air line is essential (EA make it).

I removed the air dom from my bottom drain last spring as it wasnt working properly. I also had the problem of blanket weed getting caught in the bottom drain as I ran the airline through the 4" pipe.
I dropped in airstones under the Bakki shower which worked fine, made a fair bit of current.
Probably do the same again the summer but will try the weighted line and a long diffuser.
