Cuttlebrook is the only koi dealer I have been to as it’s only 35mins away and although it’s a bit basic everyone is really friendly and the prices are affordable, plus it set in a really nice area where you can stop off for a pub lunch. Gatwick koi isn’t far but and would like a trip at some point but they just seem a bit expensive to me. It’s like anywhere really if they put a lot into marketing and presentation they command higher prices

yep years ago me and the misses went on a bit of a koi dealer ride round, think we did 4 in the day,A19 koi,S&C koi,koi polloi (now closed) and finally ABSOLUTE KOI,all in my battered peugeot 306 diesel,we spent 10 mins at absolute as our lass said she felt uncomfortable and under dressed, and after asking how much this 4" yamibuki was and being told £70 she nearly fell through the floor lol, prices in some have always got me confused, but you can see some dealers spend a lot more on premises and have to charge more than others who have nice premises but dont have the big overheads so can sell for less, andi

In my experience Gatwick Koi is not expensive compared to other Dealers within the M25 network.
Look at Koi Water Barn and Koi Waterlife prices compared to Gatwick.... They are way more expensive.
This is my Shiro Utsuri from Gatwick Koi at the bottom left, purchased as Tosai and bred by Hoshiki. I prefer heavily Marked Shiros hence choosing this one, and I really do like it, but there were larger ones in the same vat for the same price. I paid £90
That little red Hi Utsuri behind the Shiro came from Koi Waterlife and was quite a bit more expensive, and imo lesser quality and obviously quite a bit smaller. I was just desperate to find a Tosai one before the summer was over and that was the best I could find.

Not trying to pick on any Dealer in particular, but now look at the price of these similar Shiros currently on eBay. For all I know the guy heat ramps and does everything Gary does..... but he doesn't state that in the advert so I suspect he doesn't. These are over £100 more than Gary's equivalent. Maybe there is something amazing about them that I am unable to see, but I personally prefer my Shiro. I know where I'd be buying my Koi from out of the 2 Dealers:

Any other opinions on what I have posted?
Do those eBay Shiros look £150 better than mine? Maybe they do to your eye, I really don't mind if you think they do. Although I very much believe they have been "tidied up" through photo editing to improve colour contrast and to bring the whites out.
All in all I'm still reasonably new to Koi and therefore constantly looking at ones for sale, and I always end up back on Gary's website due to what I perceive as properly quarantined quality fish at good prices.Last edited by RS2OOO; 03-01-2019 at 05:22 PM.

This seems to have gone the other way, I would like to say that I wasn’t criticising Gatwick Koi I was merely stating that I like what I see at cuttlebrook and the prices are a bit cheaper...

My post wasn't directly in response to what you said Skoosh.
It was the best excuse I could find to get a photo of my fish out ha ha.
Had a long chat with Drew at Koi Waterlife about importing big fish. He said he hates doing it as the risks are so high. Even if it is a specific customer order and the customer has paid in full up front, he said if it dies in transit he would have to refund out of his own pocket and would have to sell 50+ Tosai just to recover his loss.
He said he has imported large fish before "at the customers risk" but felt it wasn't good practice as things would get messy if something did go wrong.
When you are importing 100cm Koi it simply isn't worth it unless you have 100% mark up I'd have thought. On that basis I'd imagine that 100cm Chagoi set them back at least £2500 including shipping and quarantine. Plus the fact they may have it in stock for 6 Months or more before a buyer comes along.... Every passing day is a risk of it having a heart attack and keeling over! More experienced people here can correct me if I've got that wrong.
I'd be wanting £2500 profit to take that kind of risk that's for sure.Last edited by RS2OOO; 03-01-2019 at 05:34 PM.

This goes back to the conversation on the KHV, the Japanese need to be held responsible for the fish they produce and transit of that fish until it reaches its destination. If this was the case the dealers would have a cushion of safety and would be more willing to bring in quality fish and big quality fish. In reality this means that the supply chain to the UK isn’t importing the best quality due to the risk it poses?
Btw the fish look great I especially do love a shiro and bought a tosai last summer which I’m going to stretch this summer hopefully
