Thread: No filtration

  1. #1

    No filtration

My pressure pump has failed, which means I have no filtration, I’m not feeding and at 9 degrees. It’s looking like a a week if QK don’t have one they can send out.

Do you think the fish will b ok? my stocking isn’t particularly high.

    Thanks

    Adam

I don't run my filter over the winter but only have a air pump from late December to March so you might be fine. Just keep an eye on ammonia levels and I would probably turn off heating if you have any.

Is your bio still being fed?

If not would it be worth feeding it ammonia whilst no water is passing through?

Out of interest, why would you not run your filter throughout the year ??

As I have a bottom drain feeding to a waterfall and a skimmer feeding back to a TPR keeping them on risks supercooling the water. By turning them off and using an airstone lowered halfway down the bottom layer will not fall under 4°C.
By cleaning sludge from the pond and starting the filter up in early spring together with filter bacteria balls the water quality remains good. My pond is not insulated, covered or heated but it still works well

Edit: my pond is fully submerged/not raised.

I would be opening the bypass in your drum wont do any harm as there isnt much crap this time of the year.
I would have thought Queni would carry the spares and have one next day to you.

My pond is not heated and i also turn off filtration over the winter , i just cover the pond and leave air pump to work .
Once i left filter to work , it is gravity feed filter , i almost lost the pump .Ice starte to create and came almost to the pump at the bottom . Had to melt ice with boiling water to get to the pump

What kind of drum do you have? Are there no bungs between the clean side and dirty side of your drum you can pop out?

Adam, I've just seen on another thread that you have the QK22. There are 2 x 90mm bypass bungs you can pop out, then you can run your filters until the new pressure pump arrives.

It's much safer to do this than turn water pumps off. If your entire biofilm dies you will be starting again with new pond syndrome. Koi secrete ammonia from their gills all the time not just when they are fed. In cold weather when koi spend a lot of time at the bottom they are at risk from higher ammonia concentrations down there particularly if there is no filter flow.

    Thanks Feline,

I have one of the original drums which don't come with this feature, unfortunately!

QK are sending me a new pressure pump today, so i can install tomorrow afternoon.

The pumps shower will have been dry of a couple of days, obviously the bio isn't dry but it hasn't had any flow for the same period of time.

I suspect the filters will have been damaged, although the fish seem fine st the moment. The situation has got me thinking as to how I may be able to manufacture some sort of bypass encase this happens again.

I guess I could remove the mesh itself, has anyone done that?

on my kc10 drum i have an overflow to clean side i can adjust,if it came to it i could lower this right down as a bypass, the only way i could see you doing it is using valves before and after drum with a pipe to divert incoming water to totally bypass drum, like we do when fitting uv's,so split bd pipe before drum,1 to drum and 1 to bypass then rejoin after drum, unless you fancy cutting holes inbetween dirty and clean side and fitting a removeable bung or 2,andi

I was thinking the same thing when I read this thread- screens can be removed for replacement and I would not hesitate to do this if I couldn't bypass and was waiting for a new part. If this had happened to you in summer you would definitely need a contingency plan.
