Thread: Dead spot.

  1. #1

    Dead spot.

Seeking assistance. One end of the pond appears to suffer from a lack from circulation. The easy way around this and what i did during this summer was to add air stones. Going forward i would prefer to fit some form of underwater jets (seen venturi mentioned) but cant see where these are sold. I am talking a retrofit and these would have to sit in the pond as opposed to being fitted into the walls. Whats out there?

    Thanks in advance.
    Jon.

Not sure about retrofit venturies Jon - From the little I know , you normally fit them to your return pipes - so I`m guessing your thinking of additional pipework going into the pond ?? Might get a bit messy .

Not sure of your set up , but another option could be an aerated bottom drain . You can get a retrofit model of these .

I run an aerated BD on my pond , which is an L shape and can suffer from dead spots . Having the air on makes a huge difference , and helps the water circulate , thus clearing the crap from the bottom .

    Hope this helps

    Here's a venturi for you Jon -

Needs to be fitted on a pumped return which I'm assuming that's what you were thinking about doing.

The power of the pump will dictate how well it will work, which cone you use and how far below the pond surface you can fit it. They do make a bit of noise though and the supplied flexi hose has to be above the surface to allow it to work but you can cut it down as required.

There you go Jon,i used to use one till i got the shower,if you have an under water return [1 1/2 ins ] about 6ins down in the water then you are fine, they are great i used dry solvent weld connections so i could adjust and the bigger funnel on the venturi.

The cheapest way is make your own! All you need is, a Tee piece to suit your pipe work from the pump, then choose a smaller pipe/nut wrapped in tape!! To reduce the exit diameter (that also increases the pressure locally) fit this restriction just before the vertical tee this will cause a jet of water, which will suck air down the vertical Tee, you can play around with the restriction size (hole) also use a filter wool in the vertical tee to reduce noise, or fit a long pipe to same if you want to place the Venturi deeper in the pond.
Give it a go cheap & effective?
