I used to cover my pool, but haven't for the last two years, with no losses. All my fish are now over 15" so I guess they've acclimatised themselves to our fairly mild Winters. I have today swopped over to my Winter filter pump which pumps 30% less water. Don't need so much water going through the filter in the Winter.

Whatever floats your boat, good for you.

As my fish do very little in the Winter, there's not much to see. So I try not to disturb them too much. I'm well past the first flush of enthusiasm which for me only lasted about ten years. So as was the long term intention, the pool and koi are just an enhancement to our garden.

I'm spendiing more time on my other hobbies, all six of 'em.
I've just replaced my leccy golf trolley as I didn't tghink the old one would cope too well in the Winter when the going gets tougher and I'm spending more time on my new Tyros. It's piano number six, but that is in getting on for forty years.

I'm not covered yet. I'm still enjoying the pond too much!

I'm still deciding whether to build a frame for my polycarb sheets or just slap them on like I did last year. There is a bit of sagging in the middle because of how long the span is. I'm considering buying a couple of SS tubes to go across underneath them. It's difficult to calculate how big the SS tube would need to be to not bow significantly itself over a 5.2m span. I don't want wood underneath the covers because of the preservative and koi head butting it.

I'm slowly turning down the heating at the moment. On 19C currently. The heat pump is on a lot at night though.

I'm currently building some new covers that will incorporate the shower I fitted earlier in the year. Ponds at 19c at the moment but will keep dropping till its 16c for the winter. Running a 10kW ASHP with a 3kW inline heater just as back up in case it gets silly cold. Worst last year was -6c & the ASHP kept the pond at 16c without too much trouble but was obviously on a fair bit.

I fitted 7 ply 35mm polycarbonate today. My Koi pond is currently at 12 degrees centigrade and I only have anti-icing background heating. My main aim is protecting against extreme temperature variations. Next year one of the ponds will be properly heated I hope.
