With any cover you need to ensure the wind doesn't get under it and travel along the surface of the pool. You'll lose a lot of temperature through "latent heat exchange," if you don't.

I used to use a float on heavy duty non-tear bubblewrap swimming pool cover, tailored to fit. It allowed light to pass through it.
As I always kept the air pump on, no chance of any gas build up as it escaped around the edges.

Mine are not on yet due to me physically not been able to get them on (still recovering from bowel surgery ha ha) couple of weeks though and i should be good and il have them on probs mid to end of nov. Thats usually the time i put mine on anyways around end of november.
Mine are clear polycarb sheets to a wodden frame with 2x lift out sections as lids. Worked a treat for last 3 years and years before on old pond. Just remember to keep an air gap and airation going in the pond Cover yet ?? as DHR said if its not secure enough its pointless as it will just allow wind chill to still take place.

I’m liking all the ideas and trying to decide what will work best for my pond. 1 question though. How does everyone get on if we have a bit of snow? Do you find that they can hold quite a weight if needed?

I suppose as long as the frame is strong enough with supports across middle sections then should be fine , but still
When it does snow I shall
    Clear it off cover

Polycarb sheets handle snow fine mate, you can just sweep the snow off Cover yet ?? i havd mine slightly pitched so the frame is 4” off pond edge one side and 2” on the other to give run off Cover yet ?? il see if i can find a picture from last year and post it up.
All my framing just unscrews and gets put in the garage rafters and the poly sheets get tucked behind the filter shed until needed Cover yet ??

yea would be good to see lee cheers. That’s what I was planning on doing with mine and then I started over thinking/engineering it and I don’t think I need to. And like you say if it can be easy enough to just tuck away some where when your done then that’s an important part of the planning too.

There’s about an inch gap. I left that to allow gas exchange. The winds come from up the valley and hit the back of the filter area at the back of the pond.

Do you think I should close the gap to the window?

    Thanks
