netting question
Morning All,
Woke up this morning to a Heron! he was just sitting onto of the outbuilding observing the pond until the dog scared him off. I would like to put netting on i no it does not look too good but just as a measure in case he come too close. as you can see from the pics the pond is raised and about 5ft deep. where do i fit the netting? level with the top of the pond or as close to the top of the water as poss? the water level sits about 10" down from the top.
Any suggestions for a particular hole size/ type of net?
there is also a 10"/12" wide shelf in the corner for planting by the previous owner i presume, is it worth me putting some sort of lillys in here to give them some cover?

It would be better to have the net high up at the top of the wall- they tend to sag anyway. You could put some hooks in the wall to attach it (less unsightly that keeping it in place with bricks!).
I am not a fan of nets myself, and would probably go with some metal supports with wires round the edges and overhanging the water myself. Velda do a kit that can be electrified (although you don't necessarily need to plug it in- it still makes it a lot harder for herons to wade in from the side to catch a fish). https://www.primrose.co.uk/-p-113503...RoCho4QAvD_BwE
I have in the past just used plain black fishing line through supports I inserted into little holes drilled in the copings. This did the trick and stopped the heron. If there is a planted area they could in theory land in and stand on then you can string some extra lines over that corner to create barriers for them. They don't like invisible strings touching their legs.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Ok thanks, i think you are right with the wires around the edge they would look better. just worried he might turn to dive bombing them then if they do that?

Can't really tell if there is space this side of your pond but they need a bit of space to land and take off again. Reducing the space would make them think twice. I was thinking of putting up a polypropylene shade sail over mine to stop our local dive bombing seagulls.

I've got a blagdon net on my 5m x 4m raised pond. I've fitted a plastic pole attached to the front of the net. The back is held with hooks. The sides overhang by 0.5m. It looks ok and when I'm in the garden we just roll the net back out of the way.
