    Skimmer chomping!

Does anyone else have koi who making a very loud lip-smacking sucking noise at the mouth of their skimmer- especially during the night?

It was pretty warm here yesterday so I had the bedroom window open all night. The noisy buggers kept me awake chomping and slurping. The feeder is currently off at night, so there is absolutely nothing edible in the skimmer

I must get a video of them in action. My honey chag is the chief offender, but she is certainly not alone

I should probably add- that I have just been watching the pond with the lights on, and my poor cat Rory was having a drink in the corner- and my new Cuttlebrook chag Charlie sucked his tongue He is now recovering from the shock on the sofa LOL. Charlie is a good hand feeder so must have thought Rory's tongue was my fingers haha.

I would clean the skimmer out and around the mouth of the skimmer so they are no longer attracted to it.
over the years I have had a few fish in the skimmer and it is not good!!

The thing is the skimmer is perfectly clean inside (it has no basket just a 3” pipe straight 8nto the drum) and the front plate is also clean. I think they have seen a bit of food go in there from time to time so they are convinced if they could get in they would find a snack!

Fortunately the skimmer slot is narrower than any of my fish so they definitely can’t get in there.

I have grass up to the edge of my pond most of the way round and the roots trail into the water, some of my koi spend a great deal of time "chomping" in among these grass roots
    - sometimes they can be quite loud.
I assume they are finding tiny fragments of food of some type rather than directly eating the roots but I'm not sure.
    6000g in ground koi pond
    +3000g lily/Anoxic pond attached
    29 koi (40 to 65cm)
Bottom drain, Mid water & Skimmer to Drum
JBR boichamber->Blue eco 500 pump ->below surface return.
Blue Eco 240 -> Large MB -> Waterfall -> Planted Anoxic pond (25 baskets)

One of mine (Charlie the Chagoi) has been spotted going into my skimmer to retrieve some food being "skimmed". The design means that he doesn't come to any harm so I am not that concerned but it can be disconcerting seeing an orange tail sticking out of the skimmer.

My chag always has a slurp at the skimmer at feed times on the off chance a pellet or three has been pulled into it.
