Water evaporates
Hi,
during this hot weather what would be the acceptable loss by evaporation before I start thinking that I have a leak?
many thanks

Hi,
It depends on lots of factors - pond surface area, exposure to direct sun vs shade throughout the day, temperature, humidity, use of waterfalls etc.. As a catch-all, even in this weather - I'd suggest that if it's a centimetre or more a day, I'd probably start considering a leak.
It's worth tracking over a week - measure the drop at the same time each day and see what happens.
If it is a leak - it may well be a simple issue in the pipework, rather than the 'main pond' itself (this happened to me recently with a broken UV quartz!).
Also - if it does turn out to be a minor leak and you're not on a water meter (and it's relatively minor), you could consider a 'trickle in - trickle out' top-up system, potentially eliminating any need for a regular water change.
Hope this helps.

I don’t think you have to worry about leaks,i`m topping up about 50mm every day at the moment due to temperatures, two 2 inch air stones,a waterfall & an Oase profidrum filter & this on a 2.500 gal.pond

50mm/day sounds like a leak to me My fully in sun pond with a waterfall and a big drum going off every 8 min looses less than that!
6000g in ground koi pond
+3000g lily/Anoxic pond attached
29 koi (40 to 65cm)
Bottom drain, Mid water & Skimmer to Drum
JBR boichamber->Blue eco 500 pump ->below surface return.
Blue Eco 240 -> Large MB -> Waterfall -> Planted Anoxic pond (25 baskets)

I might have been a bit exaggerating,i`m a imperial man,not really metric.Overnight, it loses no water but when the sun hits it,it probably drops an inch by the evening.I also forgot to mention.that there is a 10ft by 2 ft bank of very big plants at one end of the pond, these remove water as well as nitrates,The Koi love them!!!.

Of course, these probably don`t help evaporation but the Koi love browsing around them & doing the odd bit of gardening.

Mines in full sun all day every day, and it doesn't drop any noticeable amount at all between partial water changes.
I'd guess at worst it loses 1cm every 2 to 3 days of full sun.

Found a small hole on one of the folds, can I use a bicycle puncture repair kit on this?

as a keen cyclist I'd be very surprised if it works, particularly on a fold. They're not designed for under water use!
I'd try pond sealant and a piece of liner.

MS290 is like a black rubbery sealant that would probably be worth a go.

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
