Wanna be in My Gang
I don't know if this is a north south divide thing, but while I was up north, all the fish in my pond stuck together, and when I added new fish they went straight up to the existing fish and stuck with them.
Now down here, each set of fish we add just stick with there own set and don't mingle with the others.
I find this very strange, especially as all the small fish seem terrified of the two big fish.
What's going on.

Fred's from up north and I'm down south and I cant understand a thing he says (just hope I say yes / no in the right places )
same sort of thing really. Don't forget its a big change for them and it will just take time for them to settle in .

When I put 3 tiddlers (8-10cm) together with 3 bigger Koi (16-18cm), the 3 bigger ones chase the hell out of the tiddlers to the extent they were jumping out of the water.
It wasn't nice to watch and I was quite worried about the stress it was causing. The 3 little ones were swimming into the outlet pipe which is just below the surface and into the pipework towards the pump (pumping at 10,000 lph) before getting spat back out 20 seconds later.
After that had all calmed down they stayed in their separate groups at opposite corners of the pond, but one of the tiddlers found a crease in the liner and hid in there for 2 weeks and would not come out even for food. When I forced her out and put her the opposite side of the pond she'd swim directly back to the crease and hide in there again.
In the meantime the other 2 tiddlers started mingling with the bigger fish after 5 or 6 days and they all got on fine.
After the 2 Weeks the one in the liner started to venture out and within a few days was swimming with the bigger ones and fighting them for food!
I didn't think it would end well, but they all shoal together now and get on just fine even though the bigger ones are now approaching 30cm and the tiddlers around 14-15cm.

When you say north, do you mean north of London or north of England?

I like Anne’s response
New fish tend to respond according to personality, previous life experience, current pond conditions etc. etc. just like the new kid at school. Just check all your water tests and O2 level and all will sort itself out in time.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

As said mate sometimes it just takes time for them to settle in, ive had little uns that got stuck straight in with the bigger ones and also had them scared and fearing for their lives (or so it seemed) a week and all was well

The canny small fish befriend and follow underneath a large fish.
If they have the security of a shoal they are comfortable and can change the behaviour of the adult fish into those of crazy tosai.

Ann, sorry I confused you, I haven't got my fish from up north, and aren't going to now.
No matter what size of fish I put in my pond up north, they just cracked straight on with the other fish.
The fish down here won't at all. I have 3 small fish that have been in with two large fish for at least 4 weeks now and they dart off each time the bigger fish come near. RS, I had exactly that experience, the big ones chased the small ones so they jumped out. One jumped out 5 times, the first 4 we saw it, the 5th he wasn't as lucky, and another jumped out while we weren't there and got eaten by a magpie, so now have 3 left.
I bought 6 more small ones last weekend, and these are scared of both sizes of fish and only stay with each other, so I have 3 groups now.
I never has this up north and never had a fish jump out.
John, I mean north of England, Bratf'd to be precise, but am now in Crawley, just outside the M25 at about 6 o'clock.

Must be a north south thing.
Like ajm said. He classes me as south.
While i class a jeordi. As a jock . But just not as pure haha.
Only kidding mate.
Anne it don t matter where your from.
Your still one of us. In my eyes.
I have added some new fish from my growon into my main pond this year.
And for about 2 weeks they stuck together with out mixing.
So i starved the pond of food for 2 days. Bang they was in with the rest right away.
And now they mix.

The reason you never had this up north is because they needed to shoal closely together for warmth to survive.
Different ball game down south, bit like being on the tube, they have to keep as much distance as possible and eye contact is a definite no no, communication?..... Absolutely not.
It's just like people.... Northerners seem to know everything that's going on in their town, but southerners wouldn't ever consider taking to or acknowledging a neighbour for at least the first 20 years of living there.
I lived in one place for 8 years and not once acknowledged or spoke to my neighbours and vice versa, even after my cat went missing and I suspected they ate it.
Your Koi may have wisened up to this fact.

Ha ha ha,
Love the replies guys, sorry had a hectic few days so not been on the forum.
I'll try both methods, starve the pond for a few days, and if that doesn't work I'll chill it and see if that gets em snuggling up to each other.
