Isolating bottom drain... at the dome???

    Hi all,
I'm in the early planning stages of my filter and shed upgrade. Currently, the pipework leading from my BD runs from the dome, under the pond and out to the back of the pond, then extends immediately upwards 2-3 feet, before a right-angle bend to join a multibay...
What I want to do, is cut the BD pipework where it currently turns upwards (just behind the pond), then join (and bury) a low horizontal pipe out under the new filter shed where the pipework will pop up inside and join a Nexus.
So the question is - does anyone know how I can isolate the bottom drain in the pond/at the dome, so that I can keep the Koi in the their water for a day or so while I cut the current BD pipework and extend to join the Nexus in it's new shed????
    Hope that makes sense(?!)
    Cheers,
    Rich

You can get 4” bungs which you place into the pipe work and then turn to block it, tried one which worked very well. I’ve heard you can also put a Koi bag over a pieces of board and place this on the bottom drain hole. When you cut the pipe work the pressure of the water forcing out will clamp the board onto the drain. Never tried it though. The bag is to water prof the board and give some cushioning.

I used this last year when I had to shorten the pipe from my bd - works fine.

from the end at the back of the pond. It's tricky to explain, but (as per pic below) - at the bit I've circled - after the pipe comes out horizontally from under the pond, the pipe then goes up 90deg - (prob 2-3ft), then turns right towards the multibay. I want to get rid of this 90deg "up" and change to a 90deg right turn at pond base level towards my new filter bay (which will be roughly where the multi-bay currently sits). So I think I need something to cover the bottom drain at the bottom of the pond...?

Thanks Chris. So something like my pic below? Basically a simple frame of four bits of wood place over a strong koi bag, allowing the force of the water to pin the bag down over the BD...?

Yes essentially, however it won’t work with the bottom drain cover on. Needs a flat surface. Not sure how else you could do it sorry :/

Could you use an piece of liner with a hole cut out to fit over the dome and then put an upturned bucket which had a weight on it to seal the liner to the pond floor.

Depending on construction of pond i.e liner/fiberglass you could get a volunteer , place a large plant pot upside down on pond floor over the drain, said person stands on it when you do your mods hopefully with rubber couplings so there not in the water for a great deal of time

ive recently done similar when changing my filtration around, I forgot to install a 4" ball valve was the reason.
what I did was cut a 12" circle out of 12mm ply, managed to remove the bd dome ( I know you said you cant&#128563, I then put a bead of aqua sure silicone around the circumference of the ply then stuck it to the floor of the pond.
It worked to a degree but still leaked as I sawed through the 4" pipe. Lost about 1/3 of the water in the process as slight panic set in!

also why do you want to get rid of the right angle at pond base level, why not just add another bend high enough up the vertical pipe to still be able to bury it,andi

Metre square roughly of butyl pondliner, placed over the bottom drain, open the valves, the draw on the water in the pipework will pull it down.

That’s what I did when modifying my Nexus to a Drum - left the fish in a few feet of water, made the cut, pipework, bends, done.

However my bottom drain comes vertically up the pond side wall (3 feet or so) then turns, so it was possible.

Hi Andi - no - unfortunately not without taking the Koi out. I want to cut the pipe at the same level it appears horizontally out the the back of the pond, before it currently does a 90deg turn skywards... (I want to change this to a 90deg right turn to the new filter shed I'm building to come up under a Nexus).
