Have I got this right
Hi Guys, I have a question (what's new).
The bit I know:
Fish eat food
Fish excrete Ammonia
Filter bacteria convert ammonia to Nitrite, then Nitrate.
The bit I'm unsure of:
The amount of food fed directly equates to the amount of ammonia excreted, regardless of the amount of fish.
So one fish eating a kilo of food a day would excrete as much ammonia as 20 fish eating a kilo of food a day? It's the quantity of food that is the important thing?

Agree. Manky Sanke will advise I'm sure but fish are always excreting ammonia, even when not feeding.

If we don’t take into account factors such as activity and stress, then oxygen consumption and ammonia excretions through the gills is primarily dependent on body mass.
Small unfed fish will use a similar amount of oxygen and excrete a similar amount of ammonia as a lesser number of larger unfed fish with equivalent body mass. Oxygen consumption increases when food is metabolised and ammonia excretions increase as protein is metabolised so both would be similar whether the food is being given to a large number of small fish or a smaller number of large fish.
Growth and other metabolic processes affect both but, provided you don't try to compare a large number of fast growing fry or fingerlings with a single fish that has grown to its maximum size, then you can say that ammonia excretions are dependent on the amount of food fed rather than the size of the fish eating it.

So (if I’ve understood this correctly), then it depends on both the amount of feed and the number and size of the fish!?

Yes
More fish equals more ammonia.
More food equals more ammonia.
Less fish equals less ammonia.
Less food equals less ammonia.
As a side note Koi are starved for at least a week before shipping from Japan.

Thanks guys, and thanks Manky for clarifying, that is exactly what I thought.
Cheers,
