whos got a jumbo ?
Me and Adam were talking all things koi this morning as you do, and we got to wondering just how common or rare actual jumbo koi are and how many people have one, or more !
Jumbo is classed as 85 cm and above, so how many actually have one, doesnt matter which variety.
Thought Id do a poll to try and find out.
I don't have any jumbo's but I just might before the year ends, ive got a couple getting very close, so fingers crossed
I think its a real achievement for anyone to be able to say they have a jumbo fish and they grew It on from tosai, so respect to anybody thats done that.

Had a chagoi at 82cm which was my biggest. Unfortunately lost her last Sunday think she had an internal problem, she weighed 18lbs, never had a fish reach that jumbo 85cm yet

Cheers familyman, guess it happens to everyone, pretty much all my fish are large females and all full of eggs, don’t think they will release them so I hope they go into winter ok. Be nice to see someone with a jumbo, my next closest is my 78cm platinum.
Cheers Chris

Chris, isn't there anyone near you who has a big make they can lend you to hopefully spawn with your girls and get the gets out of them? Like a stud fish, not that you'd be bothered about the fry, just getting the eggs out before winter.

Not yet. I bought a karashigoi last year and it's growing fast, hopefully in a few more years it will be huge.

You need to make sure people only count fish they've actually measured, not estimated. It's amazing how big some people think their fish are, but haven't had them out of the pond to check
My oldest fish did much of their growing in a smaller pond so will never make jumbo.
I have some fish in the pond now with the potential to get there but it's going to be a couple of years yet. My Takigawa kohaku and Adam Byer Kohaku are the largest 2 with the body shape potential to get there first I think.
All my fish are well overdue a measuring session. I don't really like bowling them unless I need them out for a checkup or scrape. The big girls are a 2 man lift in a koi sock full of water also2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Lol, agree with Lara, very easy to think that just because a fish was 78cm a couple of years ago it will be 85 now...
We have a few jumbo in the main pond, it is getting more difficult to push them on as there is too much stock in there.
Showa - egg to 80cm is the current challenge..., now 85cm? I can dream but unlikely..

yes same, im wanting to know the exact length of some of mine but I wont catch them until theres a genuine reason , or its the end of the season and so I wont set them back by catching them.
I think my most likely candidate is a female marudo chag thats currently in the 70 somethings and this is only her 3rd year. I know my oldest chag is nudging 80 cm but its twice as old and 3 times the girth, so to push it to 85 could be difficult.

I also agree that guesstimations can be way off and as chris said i gind it really funny when someone has their hands like a meter apart saying “its got to be at least this big” 🤣
I tend to bowl and measure up every november that way i get a good look at the fish before winter comes along also

guessing can be tricky to say the least, try holding a tape measure in your hands rolled out to 60 or 70 cm, then look at your fish and your like, no way its that big
I work with measurements all day every day , and I can pretty accurately guesstimate to within an inch or so with some time to look hard, infact I usually guess under what the actual length is by an inch.
It really helps if you have one fish in the pond that you have measured recently because it gives you an indicator to compare from. If you've never handled or measured a large fish. then guessing is complete folly, the size they appear can vary hugely just by how deep they are in the water, you've got to have it right under your nose to even begin to guess.
One way I get a rough guide is to look at the size of the head from the tip of the mouth to were the smooth skin meets the scales at centre top, multiply this length by 2.5 and that will give you the length from tip of mouth to start of dorsal fin, from the start to the end of the dorsal fin is usually very close to the same length as tip of mouth to start of dorsal fin, then just add the tail length from rear of dorsal fin right back.
So lets say the head is 4 inches, multiply by 2.5 to give 10 inches from tip of mouth to start of dorsal fin, add another 10 inches to the end of dorsal fin and lets say another 6 inches from dorsal back, giving you 26 inches or 65 cm....of course its not spot on, they all very a bit, but it gets you in the ball park.
Was saying to Adam actually, who ever invents an electronic koi measurement device, that you just point at the fish and click, and then the size comes up in cm on the screen....will make lots of money, cause we'd all want one. Im sure the technology Is out there to do it.

I had several fish I bought when I was just entering this hobby, I sold it one by one I never measured them because I do not have a bowl for measuring ..but they came to me in a small bag, they were only a few cm in size at the beginning
