    Flicking

    Hi Collective, advise please folks

About three-four weeks ago the food was increased. About two weeks ago I change to growth. This time one week ago water parameters were ok.
Sunday I noticed one or two fish flicking. Monday several were flick. First reaction was bloody hell, flukes. Today first things first, I’ve tested the water and the readings are high. API testing, ammonia .25, nitrate between .25 and .50, nitrate 40, ph ok. Am I right in thinking this can cause the fish to flash against the side, bottom. Fish feed is now off and the trickle feed to the drum has been increased
First time Iv had the readings go that high in I don’t know how many years.

    Hi,
Yes Koi will flash with high nitrite readings!!

Stop feeding and do lots of water changes, if it persist scrap and microscope and treat accordingly.

Yep as already mentioned it will make them flash as the high readings will be irritating them. Big water changes to get levels down as well as trickle in/out.

Test your tap water too as they may show high levels

I went to feed mine the other morning and noticed they were a bit slow to respond when they are normally almost jumping out of the water trying to get the food. I tested the water and found the nitrite was up a bit and the oxygen level was down to 2 mgl.

Water change and additional air, next day the levels were heading in the right direction and the fish were looking for food again. I held off feeding for a few days until things got back to normal.

Mine weren't flashing just taking food and spitting it back out again. It was perfectly timed to a spawning. Which came first? (insert your own joke) Lack of oxygen due to the heat or the spawning?

I don't have a drum so not really sure, but wouldn't putting the trickle into the drum be a bad idea? Surely the bio media will be after the drum and I always thought fresh tap water amongst bio media was a no no.
