Thread: how big

    how big

How big has a koi got to be, so it always looks big every time you see it, some of mine are getting large but to me they look just average. However if some one sees them who hasn't seen them before, they cant believe how big they are. I want a fish that makes me gasp with awe at its sheer size every time I see it.
How bigs that got to be?

I bought a karashigoi last year in hope that it will be big. It's growing quite well but is still a long way off from having that wow factor. It's only 2 year old and is pretty big, but I'm guessing 80+cm will be a kind of bench mark for a big fish. 100+ for a huge fish.

    100+ isn't a fish it's a feeking whale

David, it might be a case of all the other fish are growing too so unless the biggest is massively bigger than the next biggest it will never look as big as want it to. Noticed it with a couple of mine when you first see them after the winter break for feeding. They look like they've had a growth spur over the winter months which doesn't make sense as they haven't eaten much for those cold couple of months or more. Also they all tend to grow at different rates too like most things do.

I was looking at someone's 92cm Koi last Week.

It was in a pond of around 50 koi with average sizes of about 45 - 50cm.

After being awe-struck for a few minutes, all I could think about was how would you lift it out and dispose of it when it died.

Didn't mention those thoughts to the owner.

Just get a smaller, shallow pond and the fish will look bigger.

My chagoi in my avatar is now 100 cm plus but as most of my koi are 70 cm plus, it doesn't look so big. It's only when it's taken out of the pond into a bowl that it looks big.

Any Koi past 90cm is big, you have to keep in mind that a 100cm Koi is substantially bigger than a 90cm!!
