    Uv not working

If the fuse on my new uv has blown does it mean the unit will be no good and another one will be needed

That depends on why the fuse is blown, have you taken everything apart and checked for water leaks into places it shouldn’t be?

what feline says, plus - you can get a blown fuse because of a simple spike in the supply, or a short caused instantaneously when the bulb blows.

Where is the fuse that's blown, how old's the UVC and what's the wattage of the UVC?

    Possible causes -

An overload on the UVC somewhere due to a faulty part.
A cable's been trapped and cut when a cover has been fitted.
The cable feeding the UVC has been trapped and cut.
If it's being fed via a socket or spur that has an active or non latching RCD controlling it and you've had a power cut or just had to turn things off your self that may need resetting.
Water has got in somewhere and is shorting something out.
Wrong size fuse fitted - fuse rating is too close to the rating of the UVC's running current and is not allowing for the initial start up current causing a spike.
May just have been a faulty fuse fitted.
Could be a fault with what it is connected to causing a volt drop due to a bad connection which is then raising the current (amps) the UVC requires to work.

The wattage is a constant the current is affected or dictated by the voltage feeding it. Ohm's Law - divide the watts by the volts and you will get the amps required to run the bit of equipment.

    Example -

If the UVC is a 55 watt and to be on the safe side you work on the voltage being 230 volts these days that give you a current of 0.239 amps.

The fuse that's blown, if it is in a plug top, fused spur or switch fused spur (commonly referred to as a fused connection unit or FCU) is most likely to be rated at 2, 3 or 5 amps so if it's blown one of those there is going to be a problem somewhere.

There are 2 kinds of RCDs that are in RCD protected sockets and spurs - active or non latching and passive or latching. Active or non latching trips are for us a pain in the arse as if there's a load on them and the power goes off for whatever reason they automatically trip and then manually need resetting when the power comes back on again. Passive or latching trips don't trip when the power goes off so don't need to be reset when the power comes back on again.

To add to my previous post -

If the fuse is internal to the UVC it is probably going to be a glass fuse which will probably be rated in mA rather than amps and could be a non standard size unlike plug top fuses which fit various different devices so you may need to try a few places to get a replacement.

Thanks for your reply it’s blown the fuse in the blagdon powersafe outlet box it’s a 55w evolution aqua two weeks old I may have a leak in the unit when I had the pond built the builder put the uv in a very awkward place meaning I had to do a balancing act to change the bulb so l am in the process of moving it when my slipped disc improves once again thank you for your advice

OK thanks for the additional info.

I'm going to take an educated guess going by the switch box I have and say the fuse is probably 2 or 3 amps? If so it sounds like a leak or something. Also if you are having problems working on the UVC it's likely something isn't screwed up properly causing a leak.

UVCs can be a nightmare at times, I fitted a Blagdon 35 watt one on my system about a month ago and the bloody thing has a very small leak on the outlet side to the eazy pod. Just where the hose tail screws on to the UVC

Wish I'd have gone for a different make now as it was a bit of a rush job and I didn't have time to wait for something to get delivered

Hope your back gets better soon.

Its amazing how many people fit UVs without a thought to how anyone is going to change the bulb. If the issue started after you did that then I am voting for a leak- either O ring related or even cracked quartz sleeve.

Agree with that as when I fitted mine recently I made sure that the tube could be changed without needing to fight the eazy pod. It's just a shame that I haven't had time to clean the shed out so I can access the end of the UVC looks like that's my job for the weekend amongst the other never ending list of things to do!!!

Glad to hear you got a result in the end, unlike my shed clearing plans lol
