    drum filter

Looking at re doing my pond next year but this time doing it properly with gravity fed bottom drains and drum filter.
I have a budget of £2000 for a drum filter and looking for peoples thoughts of whats the best to go for at that money. I was looking at the aqua forte xl that looks a good price.
    Any advice much appreciated

How much flow/how many inlets/outlets do you need?

  3. #3
The aqua forte has a max flow 35 m³/h and 75 micron mesh and 3 inlets and 2 outlets which sounds good to me. I'm planning on having 2 x under water outlets and 2 x water blades but nothing set in stone yet I thought I would sort out the best drum for the budget and work from there.

What volume of water are you planning and how often are you going to want to turn it over?

Bigcarpchaser I'm looking at getting the best drum for that price and working from there

I have a OASE drum and it is used with a very low water level, this makes it clean more often. It has worked for the last three years without fault. They come with a 5 year guarantee and complete manufacturer back up.
    Can not praise it enough.

The term you get what you pay for comes to mind. I do know a koi keeper who has just removed his after a little over a year and two replacement screens fitted, hence its removal.

    then there is this .

for a budget of 2k a secondhand Nexus 210 with a Draco comes to mind.

The guy who is building my pond is also telling me oase so I might have to re think

The point I was trying to make (not very well, bit tired and harassed lol) is size your filter to fit your pond/stocking levels not the other way round.
ie, if your pond is going to be 50,000 litres then that drum won’t be any good.
plus, I’d be taking manufacturers flow rates with a pinch of salt so I’d be wanting some spare capacity built in, say 20%.
you said “ bottom drains” (more than one?), skimmer? That’s 3 inlets so the Aqua Forte would meet those requirements however, not seem one. They’re a pretty well respected company though it seems.
Off to bed, my brain hurts.

Bigcarpchaser thanks for your input and understand what you are saying. I will be having 2 x bottom drains and 1 skimmer. I am thinking now of going with the oase as I have not heard a bad thing about them and although over what I wanted to pay I've got a bit of time before I build the pond. My pond at the moment is 3000 gallons with 2 x retro bottom drains into a kockney koi power fall filter and a homemade 3 x bin filter . These filters work fine with water perameters spot on but I've had enough of cleaning sponges especially over winter. I have 10 koi from 55cm down to 10cm with 5 more arriving in spring.

Cool, let us know how you get on. At £3k I personally think the OASE is vastly overpriced but then I think they’re all flipping expensive for what they are.
At that kinda money your choice widens though, ProfiDrum would probably be worth a look at for example along with the QK35.

Whatver you decide I’m sure it’ll be right for your situation, don’t forget pictures please

You could have a Draco solum 25 stand alone and a bio chamber for 2k,i have the 25 on my 3000 gal pond but cant comment on the others as i have never had them.
The Q/k ones are very popular as well.

is that your only bio filtration rob, because the bio side is a bit small isn't it, how does it cope?

I was kind of hankering after a qk 35 combi bio, but again i don't think they hold enough on the bio side, so im hoping to get a standalone drum and a purpose made large bio chamber.

    drum filter

I also added a Bakki Shower with 60KG of BHM when I did the drum upgrade. I’m running approx. 120 litres of K1 (recommended 100).

I moved from a Nexus 220 with 150 odd litres of K1, so in K1 terms not a huge difference.

The QK35 is a big unit, so my choice of Profi was really governed by its small footprint (or is that the Aquasource Synergy Combi, I forget).

I also didn’t fancy going the drum/stand-alone bio option, the ‘all in one’ approach just suited what I was after. It is more cost effective, if I can use that term, going stand-alone.

I also went with the Amalgam UVC in the clean side.

OASE’s are a popular option - I always preferred the original drum and stand alone bio units in their range, but I don’t think you can get them any longer (I think Lara’s setup on the Forum).

I would recommend getting yourself out to Arcen for the Dutch Koi Show, and if your in the market for a drum - seeing the sheer number of Dutch RDF manufacturers last year was quite an eye opener; every shape, size and variety. Have you seen the Aquaking Red Label range also?

capacity than the combi and deffo more alround than an oase. plus it cost me 500 less than an oase and 1k

cheaper than a combi doin it that way taking up the same space aswell . also run 80kg bhm through a bakki as a

    separate filter

    drum filter

Another QK drum owner here and cannot fault it really. Yes its Not as mega fancey as some of the others but its as good at its primary job imo drum filter. I think the oase are way overpriced for what they are in terms of design and build material. But thats my opinion. I did ALOT of looking about and seeing most makes and models of drum units in the flesh before going with the Qk22.

Another vote for the QK range - really pleased with mine
I am using my original bio which is a large multibay with k1and a converted sand filter full of micro K1. Maintenance is such a doddle now.
    6000g in ground koi pond
    +3000g lily/Anoxic pond attached
    29 koi (40 to 65cm)
Bottom drain, Mid water & Skimmer to Drum
JBR boichamber->Blue eco 500 pump ->below surface return.
Blue Eco 240 -> Large MB -> Waterfall -> Planted Anoxic pond (25 baskets)
