Drum Setup - Oase - Timed Cleaning / Auto
Hi guys & girls....
Just curious to know how you have your drum setup?
I've had my Oase Proficlear Premium + 2 moving bed modules installed for a few months now, and very happy with the water clarity/quality.
At present its still setup on Auto, so it cleans when the water level drops on the clean side.
Admittedly i haven't looked to see how many cleans it does a day at present, but keen to know what everyone else's is doing?
Also whats the benifit to timed cleaning, which is an option on mine? On the surface surely a timed clean runs the risk of the drum getting too dirty, and the dirty side overflowing? Or have i got this wrong?
Thinking about it, i could turn my pumps down over winter I have 3no Eco240's each sitting at 1500 RPM normally (approx 50W each).
This flow also creates a draw on the skimmer line, which isn't necessary in winter as the pond covers are on.
Im also keen to see pictures of other Profi Drums (Laura) with a UV installed, and also with the air line in the RH corner to clear that cr8p that gathers there (do you worry about it fouling the drum at all)
I do add my airstone, but only while i'm standing next to it - let it clean a few times, then remove.
Thanks

I have OASE drum and leave it on auto!!
You say you are very happy with your water quality so why would you want to change the settings??
If you want to save some energy turn your pumps down?
You cannot add a submersible UV into a OASE drum, this is the advice given by OASE.
If you are concerned about “crap” building up every couple of weeks hose away anything away that has accumulated.

I have the Oase and 2 modules. I leave it on auto, this means it cleans every 20 mins for 10 seconds. I think it uses about 2 litres every time but I could be wrong as I can’t remember the exact figures.
I purge my BDs to waste every month or two and take the screens out to give a good deep clean of any build up.

I don't have an Oase drum- mine is the Aqua Combi 55 from Coastal Koi. The UV is fitted on the clean side of the drum, via a tank connector fitting I drilled into the side. Coastal sell the kit for that as well as the Amalgam UV unit.
I think the only reason someone might consider a timed clean rather than auto is if the drum isn't cleaning very often due to not many koi or dirt in the water. You don't want stuff sitting under water on the screens for too long, so increasing the cleaning frequency by putting it on a mined setting could be considered. Also if the waste chute was getting cruddy increasing the time of the flush could possible help. But if it aint broke, dont fix it.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

My water is very hard, I removed the screens, used lime lite and a tooth brush to clean them. Then throughly rinsed in pond water before re fitting.

your rdf will always clean when it becomes clogged whatever setting you have it on. Also the default setting for a timed clean is every 20 minutes after the last clean whether it needs it or not. It will also do an extended clean after every 24 cleans. I have increased the cleaning duration of mine from 10 to 20 seconds on an auto clean and from 20 to 40 seconds on an extended timed clean. I was having a slight build up of crud occasionally in the drain hopper but this has cured the problem hth.

I had planned to clean my drum screens with citric acid (or white vinegar), but it hasn't been necessary. The high pressure pump for the drum sits in the clean side and I'm using RO water on the pond, so there are no minerals to accumulate on the screen really. The good things about citric acid is it's a pretty safe thing to get in your pond if you're not able to fully rinse it off (so long as you have sufficient KH in the pond of course).
