First step is turn around before you even think of entering a koi shop. It'll save you so much time and heart ache .
Try a worth while hobby like Lion Taming and Parachuting. You can do both at the same time if you like.

For your bottom drain set the pipework in place then concrete over it rather than leave a channel.
Make sure your bottom drain pipework is watertight.
Bung it off at one end, fill with water, leave overnight and see if the level has dropped.

Have you tried drawing it all on some large graph paper. That's what I did for mine.

Also our soil is clay. We used a 9" concrete base with the reinforcing grids. I also made some 90 degree rebars and wired them in place to allow the hollow blocks to fit over them, it saves drilling then. So we used hollow blocks with rebar and concrete fill. I laid it all myself, had never done that before so it was slow but did the job. If I can do it I'm sure you will be able to.

This is what I knocked up to give me an idea of size etc.

Quick question regarding the bottom drain. When starting the work, do I lay the bottom drain and pipe work down then do the reinforced base over the top of it and just leave the riser for the bottom drain visibible?

    cheers,

    Jim

Yep lay all BD pipework first. Make sure you test all the joints first to check for leaks.
