    K1 and micro k1

Hi all back from holiday and my pump was running slow so stripped it down only to fined micro k1 stuck in the Veins of the impeller. I have a jbr plastic bio and has you know the feed and return have a mesh over them I have 150 litres of k1 in it and I had a spare 6 litres of micro k1 so I put it in only to fined out that the micro must just very slowly get through only to get stuck in the pump so my question is how do I get it out ! Ideas please

I’m surprised the micro k1 got through the mesh
the one jbr made for me has holes no larger than what you find in an average colander. I can’t see micro k1 getting through that

    K1 and micro k1

Don’t forget as the K1 tumbles around, some of it can become a little deformed.

I had a similar problem when I first installed my Profi Combi and having reused all the K1 from my Nexus. Over the course of the first week, these entirely flat pieces of plastic kept cropping up in the pond (flattened presumably by the impeller of the pump).

Although the Profi has a metal mesh screen, separating the outlets and air diffuser from the media section (as Toffee describes).

I would previously find squashed pieces of media in the metal slotted section of the Nexus (that separates the outer Bio section from the outlet). Probably and as the media was reused, some pieces were already deformed.

I didn’t use Micro in the Profi; I didn’t want to go through cycling new stuff mainly, but it did seem that Micro would simply pass through said screen.

A flattened piece of media looks like it would pass through those holes, likewise Micro.

When you say get it out; out of the pump or as it’s all mixed in now, separating the K1/Micro? If it’s the latter have fun one Sunday; emptying it and hand picking through it all, I don’t see any other way! (maybe with a perfectly sized sieve).

(You could maybe make something and sell it as a K1 sorting tool!!)

    Rob.

Sorting micro K1 from K1 is one of those laborious tasks in life that I think are best subcontracted to kids / grandkids / local kids for pocket money
"I will pay you £1 per kg of micro K1 you put in this bucket here" could be very effective LOL.

316 stainless mesh over those holes should do the trick.
you can find it on amazon or flea bay.
Or you could attach it over the outlet and hold it in place using a rubber boot - I haven’t tried this but I think it should work

Thats only going to work with clean K1/micro. There’s no way the kids are going to sort through used media especially if there’s worms & muck all over it.

I'd be on the phone to jbr for some mesh as what's been supplied isn't working. Plus I wonder what the collective cross section of those holes are.

I dont think you really want to put mesh there- would block with blanket weed instantly.

The chamber simply isnt designed for micro. My combi wouldnt hold in micro either. You do get the odd piece of broken or crushed K1 make it through in all these type of filters in my experience- even the Nexus and Pod. Its bad luck if it jams your pump though - ive never had that happen.

This is one situation where HelX is a good choice of media as the pieces are bigger.

I agree with Feline, JBR chambers are designed for K1 so you can hardly blame them.

not jbrs fault I have a chamber from them and it is plainly obvious the micro k1 wont work in it . I have 2 friends that also had a jbr bio made for them . I made them 316 stainless mess to fit inside rubber boots so it would be safe to use micro

Surely the micro will collect against the s/s mesh restricting the water flow and be impossible to clean. Just a thought!

wish your kids lived my way. my grand kids will not do any work unless it starts at a ten pound note. what happened to bob a job. ha ha. cheaper to do it myself. even pocket money has risen up there.
mind to be fair. what can you buy now that is cheap. this is what i get now if below a tenner

Surely there shouldn’t be any blanket weed getting through to the bio chamber?
there should be a drum or vortex or at least a sieve before a bio chamber

I don’t think so, I haven’t heard of any nexus users complaining about k1micro restricting flows on their outlets.

There is no problem with muck in the bio there is a drum in front of it putting a mesh over the outlet will turn into a big job and what do you fix it in place with ?
