Thanks Dave, yes very interesting, quite difficult to take it all in, in one go, a lot to learn.
Really good how he shows the difference between a very good fish and a weaker one, despite the fact that to an untrained eye they look quite similar.

Just had a quick read through that, its opened my eyes somewhat! Now I understand why folk have started adding Uv's in there drums, and I think I'm going to try turning the air dome on my bd right down instead of having it going through so strongly, and that about flow rates and settlement in the pipes was interesting too (might just try a slightly larger pump on mine!)

Sounds like stopping the feed through the winter months and letting the temps fall of to some degree (which is something I like to do) isn't a bad idea either!

Deffo some ideas I'm going to try to implement into my own setup!!

Must admit I'd never really thought that uv placement could matter so much!??

In terms of "quality" not what would be considered a particularly good Sanke, but what the fish has is a frame that ticks the boxes in terms of getting big which David may find helpful.

Not a fish that likes net or bowl and is a real handful in a bowl so doesn't come out much..

I'm also having a go at seeing if I can get some to jumbo without trashing them now I have some fish with good genetics in my pond. So far things seem to be going very well- there is some significant growth on some fish I've only had a few months. It wasn't until I looked back at some photos from May/June time that I realised- when you see them every day it's gradual and you don't notice (a bit like your kids growing up LOL).

I've got to the point of needing the help of my OH when I bowl the big guys- they are seriously heavy in a koi sock full of water. Got soaking wet today just scraping one

Mike has been a really valuable guy to chat with and learn from- once I've got over the expense of the new pond build I will save up for something special with real jumbo potential from him.

What a lovely pond Dave and your koi look fantastic,in fact i have watched it twice.

What do you have dangling above the water? and are you on a drum as your water looks spot on.

Chinese lettuce; it gives them something to play with..

Truth be told at this time of the year the water parameters are far from ideal, too many fish and too much feed going in, but it is a question of making the most of the summer.. I run a profidrum which does OK mechanically but needs a new main seal - rather too much water is leaking through and bypassing the screen.. There is always something to do..

Dave, if you were choosing a fish to hopefully grow to jumbo as the main aim, would you go for a Kohaku?

I am hoping my 2 Showa you bred will make it one day of course, but I think being in a smaller pond for their first year here probably set them back a bit at a crucial time. They've come on in leaps and bounds this past year though and their beni has benefitted from RO I think.

Mukasi would be the no 1 choice, very difficult for them not to go Jumbo... GoSanke wise it would probably be Kohaku, then Sanke ahead of Showa, the Utsuri roots in the Showa make large fish rather less common I think, having said that the Momotaro Mako lines produced some monsters.

I'm not that keen on Mukashi really
I think I will probably go for a Kohaku, preferably with Kuchi beni if Mike can find me a suitable one.

I have a nice Takigawa Kohaku I got from Absolute this year that's coming on nicely- maybe that one will make Jumbo.
I think it has a big frame, but I'm not skilled enough to be sure about this- what do you think?

Here it was in April (sorry wouldn't stay straight in the bowl as it had a long journey back here)

I have not bowled it since, but seems to have filled out well in the pond. Can see it twice on this pic because of refraction
