    Pond Water Testing / Monitoring

I am at the next stage in the hobby when i want better that test tubes with basic tests and readings, I don't like the idea of drop tests ammonia from 0 to to 0.25 and guess work. I have been looking at the Seneye set up with the wifi.

I really would like a Hanna system but the cost is just too expensive for me.

I would like to monitor pH and Ammonia. Nitrate, Nitrite and KH i can work out with these two and still carry out drop tests

Any advice or recommendations are much appreciated.

There a new test meter called an iDip come out but I don't know how accurate it is.
I know someone who has one and we will be comparing my hanna to his iDip to see what readings it gets.

I purchased an IDip 570 a few month ago but it's still in the box, even though I've not used it it is a good bit of kit.

I can't really suggest anything because I went from drop test kit to a palintest 7100 photometer fairly quickly. I couldn't stand the guessing.

What about the Hanna pocket checkers? They're about £40-£50 per parameter.

Not used a Seneye but i found some of their literature recently which stated "Medicating {an aquatic environment} as a preventative measure is far better than medicating because the need has arisen."

I queried this but there was no response.

I have been using the Idip for the past 6 months, the best thing about it is I have a record of every test I've done on my phone.

Is the Idip easy to use? haven't seen any instruction manuals on line but looks favourite so far

Does the iDip test ammonia? On the website it is not listed as an available test in the "Tests and Reagents" section of this page: The eXact iDip*Smart*Photometer System- smart water testing : Industrial Test Systems, Inc. (ITS)

I got quite excited when I saw the iDip, and impressive similicity to use with results on my iThings. But then I realised it does have some limitations- which turned out to be a deal breaker for me.
it can only read ammonia down to 0.1. Some of the other tests also do not go down to zero, including nitrite
For many of us this would result in readings of LO across the board except for nitrate a lot of the time. For me the whole point of an electronic water testing device is to get accuracy down to decimal places, and not to have to guess what the actual reading is like you do with liquid test kits. For someone who just wants to know if their water is safe for the fish, but not accurate values at the lower end, it would e perfect.

These are the ranges they advertise it can cover.

    • pH test 6.0.- 8.5 (100 tests)
    • Ammonia 0.1 - 12 ppm (25 tests)
    • Nitrite 0.07 - 16ppm (50 tests)
    • Nitrate 0.02 - 3.8ppm (50 tests)
    • Phosphate 0.02 - 3.8ppm (50 tests)
    • KH (calcium hardness) 12 - 200ppm (0 - 12 DH) (100 tests)
    • GH (Total Hardness) 60 - 600 ppm (3 - 22 DH) (50 tests)

I was disappointed to see that the idip requires reagents and dipping. I imagined, wrongly, that it would comprise a probe that you stuck into the water and it automagically gave you all your readings.
Does such a product exist, or is that a bit to Star Trek?
