Old Style Superfish Cages
Right. I have mentioned a few times that i made a diy sieve which worked well when i was pump fed but now i'm gravity fed i can't use it as i dunno how to diy a weir.
Well it occured to me today that i can still use the sieve. I just need to run it through a different pump which i'd put in the pond.
Now, i find the old style Superfish pump cages really flimsy. They come away from the pump with minimal effort. So a fish could easily knock it off then i worry that a smaller one would be sucked in.
Does anyone have a practical solution to securing the cage to the pump? I did think "cable ties" but i'd want to be able to remove the cage a bit quicker than cutting cable ties.
So something i can undo easily/quickly but something a fish couldn't undo by bumping against it.
Hmmmmm. *Strokes chin*

Trace - I went back to take photos but my flash wouldnt work as i had a low battery.
1meterchag - Trouble with cable ties is it always leaves a sharp bit sticking up and it's a pain when you wanna remove the cage. Don't forget...i am a clutz and rubbish at DIY. My ex reckons it's because i have a mild form of autism. I just think it's because i'm a clumsy oaf.
Here is my solution:
I have yet to drill the holes. I don't think i will need more than about 30 holes since the pump thread is only 40mm diameter.
So 3.142 x 20x20mm = 1256mm
So a 4mm drill bit would be....
Oh....thats 300 holes ! That can't be right.
Trace....help me with the maths please ?
Anyway the thing i'm going to use is a £1 tupperware container from the Poundshop. I might go to Dunelm and get one that's taller and thinner.

Before going any further ... how is that threaded adaptor attached to the container?
If it's just adhesive/sealant that's holding it on it won't last a week ... that container is probably made out of polypropylene (PP or triangle with a 5 in it) no normal sealant/adhessives will bond properly to this ...
You need a threaded tank connector ...
Can you show me pics of the pump I may have a better suggestion for pre-filter ...

Hiya
It's threaded onto a male threaded thing inside the lid, so does the same thing as a threaded tank connector.
I do have many actual threaded tank connectors kicking about so i could swap it for one of those if you think it's critical. But it would mean more of a gap between the pump and the cage if you know what i mean.
I'll get you some pics now, before it gets dark.

Better pics...
The white part pokes through the hole with the back of the white part being too big to fit through the hole if that makes sense.

Little tip for any of the viewers at home thinking of trying this out for themselves:
Don't stand on the hot drill bit in bare feet.

Cant see why that wouldnt work andre might have to put a few more holes in it just to make sure the pump gets enough flow but i think its a very good idea giving you a very quick on off connection of the cage mate
Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkIts always a work in progress

What was your idea Trace? I've still ended up wlth an annoying amount of holes to de-burr and it's not easy to reach them all.

Lee i'm sure i've seen a formula somewhere to get the minimum amount of holes to flow through a given pipe size but i can't find it.

Was going to suggest one of these:
1.5" SOLVENT WELD PERFORATED INSERT | eBay
or one of these:
2"/1.5" SOLVENT WELD Filter Cage. pond pipe koi | eBay
............ just a bit more elegant and don't need to be glued in ......

Just showed your video to hubby .... he said he would just use a couple of small stainless screws to hold the original cage on ... that's what he does here with any loose plastic guttering etc. ....
I still like my perforated insert suggestion better ..... you can also get course and fine big foam blocks for these for other purposes ... I use one on my QT tank pump input with just a static K1 and UV after the pump ... to clean you just pull it off and squash it in a bucket of pond water a few times ....

pug has a very impressive veg filter on his pond, have a look at some of his his youtube videos....
