Ladies in Waiting
Separated these two from the rest of the crew last week.
They were a tad unimpressed, particularly the Tancho but have settled down dancing round their handbags in the confines of the growing on tank.
Just now a question of timing before introducing each to eligible suitors..

Yes Mick has pushed last years fry on real well..
Mine will be rather less natural in terms of raising as I'm not allowed a mud pond or polytunnel so have to cope with whats available...
Male - Humm --haven't seen the primary male in the flesh .... Takigawa and around 63cm..
There are a few options in the pond at the moment but this one will be an ideal match..
Tosai pic below ; shows just a tad of promise at that age....

Dave what size are those lovely females and what size is your growing on tank?
I only ask as i want to make a proper growing/quarrantine tank as at the moment I'm using a 200g vat for quarantine. Also what filtration do have on it?

Hi Dave,
will you spawn them in your tank or a show vat? The tancho looks ready from her size, are the offspring going in the grow, good luck with it all, just goes to show from micks that it possible to get some good/decent koi.

Tancho will be first set, I have an Aquosis vat set up recirculating water from the main pond..
Brushes from this will go into a 300 gallon tank in the shed. I can recirculate water from this into the tank the girls are currently in so I get the benefit of the shower.
The Kohaku will be second and will be spawned in the inside tank.
The brushes will go into 4x2x3 nets for hatching out and I will be turning the flow down a fair amount and have made up diffused .5mm mesh grids for the Drains etc.. to avoid escapees..
Well thats the plan..... at the moment..

Hi,
it all sounds good fun, and alot of work lets hope both koi come out ok after the spawning.
Any plans on what you are doing with the baby koi.? Would be good to get one to the magic 80cm , that would be a achievement more so if its good quality.

Looking forward to see how you get on , and weather the koi produced are of any standard worth keeping long term, hard bit must be the culling to keep the numbers down and give the others the chance to grow.

Hi ,
are the two girls in the grow on so that you can feed them more to help produce more eggs?
And jumping off the subject does your grow on pond have better background levels of amm/nitrite with it being turned over 5 times a hour.

They are in there solely to prevent accidents and hopefully give me a measure of control, they would be a lot happier and probably feeding more if they were where they belong - in the main pond...
Grow on parameters - all depends on how hard it is pushed Jason, at the moment with just the two in there its only ticking over. 50 Tosai at 30cm in April, being fed at will is a more realistic load and even then I am looking to top out at Total Ammonia sub .05 and Nitrite .08 if I run skinny KH.

New male came East down the M4 this morning..
He is going to have his work cut out over the next week or so.. But for sure if pec size were a sign of virility then this little chap will be ideal..
