Babies seen in pond
Hi, just thought I would post this and ask the question, how common is it that koi would spawn in a pond? My pond is 12x10x6ft and I have a lot of floating pennywort on the surface and an oxygenator underneath the surface of the water, both of which have spread a lot. I have put 19 fish in altogether, 4 goldfish, 4 ghost koi, 11 koi, the goldfish, 1 koi and the 4 ghost koi are all over 2 years old and the rest of the koi were bought young this year. Ive been away for 2 weeks with my mum looking after the pond and when ive come back I thought I saw a small fish darting around when I was feeding them, then yesterday I definitely saw a small fish, looks like a ghost, probably about an inch or two long. Ive also seen possibly a normal koi which I cant tell whether I put it in there myself or whether it has been bred in the pond. Im wondering whether with the amount of plants i have would allow the fry to survive and how many im likely to have? because they are ghosts its hard to see, and my pond is a bit of a mix between a wildlife pond and a koi pond so I don't like the water to be too clear.
Just an interesting thing to happen really, didn't think it was easy to breed koi in ponds.
Thanks

I'm with you on this - I've got around 30 young Koi appeared since mid September , apart from 3or 4 that seem to have reverted to Carp the rest are all similar to the largest Koi in the pond a largely white koi with an orange head and some body markings . One or two have some lg black blotches but it's not obvious who's the daddy !
I've put 9 in a lg tank in my cellar to see if they develop quicker over the winter in a constant temperature !
Early days !

It's not easy to breed koi in a pond with goldfish, the fry tend to turn out to be 100% goldfish or koi-goldfish hybrids. Something to do with the goldfish eating the tiny koi fry but the koi not eating the tiny goldfish fry I believe.

The fry look like Koi and nothing in common with the one juvenile Calico goldfish mixed in with them . Apparently the way to tell is whiskers - if they're Koi they have whiskers , if they look like Koi , no whiskers they're hybrids and if they look like goldfish then they're probably goldfish !!! Any brown hybrids tend to have an orange belly too !!
C'mon spring and we'll see what we've got .

Just netted some of the bigger ones - No whiskers !! Guessing that means they're Koi/ Goldfish hybrids !
