oday, I had another little glitch with the project:

Loch Ness Shiro spotted in Horseshoe Pond! - Adam Byer - Koi Hobbyist

somehow - one of the shiro from my early summer spawning survived after the pond harvest in the fry pond outside, grew more than the koi I kept in a nice recirculation pond (and were well fed), and might not look that bad too. if only it werent eating all my latest kohaku hatchlings...

That is really weird isn't it. But you can't fight survival instincts. Only chance would be to try and get the shiro's in with food and a net.

Even in the fry there will always be a tobie you want to cull because it eats all its brothers and sisters.

    Sad... hope you sort it

and, there's a pic of the two shiros and a slightly unexpected success story too to tell:

    2014 breeding season is go.

Over the last couple of weeks, I've been walking from my winter koi hibernation and aches and pains are arising as I get back into some hard work.

I'll keep my blog site as up to date as possible. Just got in this evening after some good work with a head torch - adding aeration and fertiliser to the fry ponds.

the last few weeks has gone really well with that first kohaku spawning - here are the fry now:

Kohaku (#1) Fry - 3 1/2 weeks in the fry pond - YouTube

however, all the other spawnings have been quite troublesome. All the parent fish are fine, but I've had trouble getting fertilised eggs and trouble getting my showa females to spawn at all. Shows that even after the experience last year, nothing's for certain with koi...

I've been keeping a more up to date blog on my FB page here https://www.facebook.com/AdamByerKoiHobbyist , and there are the usual blog updates here: Adam Byer - Koi Hobbyist

Hope all goes well mate it seems you've been busy:-)

thanks, and yes it's been quite full on. little dissapointed not to have had more success in the spawning vat, and perhaps I'm a little jaded after all the early mornings checking the spawnings.... I've picked up an IP cam which has improved things no end - so I can check the koi from bed! I'm taking a break from spawning now for a few weeks and will get back to it at the end of june in an attempt to fill my second fry pond outside. I've got two showa females that I really want to run with, and neither spawned even after two attempts. so with a month off, I'm hoping it will be third time lucky...

Hi. Have you come across Kevin Ellis' "Koi Nerding" videos? He's a hobbyist and records his koi keeping year with videos that he publishes on vimeo. They include his trips to Japan and visits to ponds around the UK with stunning fish in some of them. Well, he visited us a few weeks ago and that interview and tour around my place features heavily on the newly released video. It's free to watch, and you can see it here: https://vimeo.com/97352255

Hi. Been a while since I've updated you guys - it's been a tough 1.5 mths of trying to get another successful spawning. And it's proved harder than I thought.

I've done a lot of spawnings - and they either havent worked, or did produce eggs but no fertilisation, or on one occasion - I got fertilisation and the eggs developed ok, but they failed at the hatch point.

this weekend I'm having one last fling with spawning. brought in additional males to help with a lack of milt in my pre existing males.

    we'll see what tomorrow brings.

I've started second selection on my kohaku spawning (the early May one), and some ok looking fish starting to be found. this has been the best part of my season so far.

I'm about half way through the second selection, and here are a few examples:

A few small pretty ones from this evenings selections; like this one - Adam Byer - Koi Hobbyist

Found this little Tancho tonight.... - Adam Byer - Koi Hobbyist

Another 4.30 start ahead for you Adam and on a Sunday

Hope they are "on it" first thing and things running smoothly.

The babes look great and great growth, exciting and stimulating to see how things are panning out and respect for the work you are putting in.

Showa is spawning :-) In progess. It's my 5th attempt with her this summer. It's a bit emotional.

When it's all finished - I'll be spreading those eggs into several "baskets" so to speak to manage the risks.

really enjoying your blog updates, just wish there was a way you could get more pics in there

I've a few more pics from second selection on the blog here:

A few more from second selection - Adam Byer - Koi Hobbyist

and I'll try and get some more :-)

my wife kept finding really good patterned fry in the small ones, and we've been putting them into a separate tank so they can grow without competition from the larger ones. some of them are promising - but it's difficult to photograph them in the tank! I look forward to sharing though ....

the spawnings all went well in the end a couple of weeks ago, but I lost all the eggs. Work has kicked off in a big way, and I'm pretty much at 7 days a week now and will be for a while, and that ofcourse takes priority over the koi breeding...

the kohaku keepers are growing well and I'll get some more pics up soon.
