    Spawning project

Here are a few pics of my small scale spawning project. Now on day 10 from spawning and the fry appear to be feeding well.

Cheers, Yes I’m sure I will and no doubt I will be bending your ear when it comes to the first cull if I’m lucky enough to make it that far!

Not sure I will be much use with Kohaku, you just look for the ones with the nice beni pattern... I think..

How many have you in there?

Females are Kohaku and Sanke the males are Kohaku. The bowl in the photo had around 50 fry this was just a random scoop from the hatching net so at a guess I would say about 1000. I only hatched 2 of the six spawning brushes.
Last year after spawning I had to treat for Trick and flukes. If the same where to happen now how old would the fry have to be to withstand a treatment?

Your biggest dilemma will be on how many you can raise.. Been there, got the T shirt in terms of getting too greedy and compromising the lot.

Fry are pretty robust but not at all sure they would be comfortable in PP.

I hadn’t planned on raising large numbers just wanted to experience the spawning/raising of the fry if I end up with 2 or 3 keepers I will be happy.
My plan is to keep the numbers low to give the others a fighting chance a few members from my local koi club will take a few fry to grow on.
I kind of guessed PP would not be a good idea fingers crossed when I scrape tomorrow.

If you hatched them in the net where they are now you may find a few odd critters. Tetrahymena being one, could be confused with chilo as similar, but not a serious threat to the Koi.

How do you scrape a little fish fry like that.
Be some job. Hard enough to net them.
    Never mind scrapes.
Great job on the spawning mate.
    Great job.
    Facinates me.

As the fry were in the same water as the parent koi it wasn’t necessary to do so.
However if needed to scrape young fry I believe the best way is to sacrifice a fry and place under a cover slip for investigation.
