decent size plant/vegetable filters

Hi i am thinking of building a decent size vegetable filter around 8ft x 4ft.
Has anyone got any decent designs or threads on them,
iIhave tried to search the forum and websites but cant find a decent designs for one this size with quick maintenance.
The ones i have seen are a box full of pea gravel which i think would end up filthy and take ages to clean.
I was thinking of building one using a liner with a bottom drain to filter off crud. Then sit plastic eco grid in the bottom so crud could settle under in it to be drained off. then i would sit baskets of plants on top of the eco grid but use pea gravel in the baskets instead of aquatic compost. do you think this would be effective as it would be very easy to drain off and clean with the pond vac having no gravel in the filter. Also plants would be easy to remove and repot when growing and also for storage over winter appreciate any advice thanks

if possible id only make it as wide as you can reach, the same as you do when growing veg, makes maintenance so much easier if you can readily reach to at least the mid point and still be comfortable in the position to do stuff

Something I put together at the end of last summer

Baskets filled with gravel no compost at all

Easy to lift out and clean Maybe not as large as you want but can be easily added to and possibly an idea to start with

Hi jonny mac what size is your pond? how did the nitrate levels change with that size of plant filter? i was thinking of making a rectangle like flower bed out of sleepers and putting a liner in with bottom drain. then fill it with planted baskets with pea gravel like you have. i think it will work

    Hi Jonny

Pond is approx 1500 gallons nitrate levels were spiking a few times last summer needing a 20/30% water change 2 or 3 times last year.

This was fitted late august / september and everthing settled down fine although it was late in the year. I kept them running all winter with plants in place and nitrate levels have been fine all winter, but dont forget there has been no feeding etc.

This summer will tell how well it will work but I think it will be 100% spot on.

I am going to add a Oase aqua skim 20 skimmer in the spring and filter the return through another single box and then to a waterfall blade, all doing lots of jobs at once Skimming, water surface braking, veggie filter and of course more nice flowers to look at

if thinking of something that size why not go the anoxic filter route and plant your baskets, this way can lift out for cleaning and the plants will thrive from what ive seen of others, andi

Mines just a large planter made from wood, liner , tank connector and baskets filled with gravel for easy cleaning
Although planning pond rebuild next year and most likely putting plants back in pond as a large rectangle pond is a bit boring with just fish in it ...
