Gunnera
I know it's not strictly a pond plant but does anyone else like these? Or (ideally) know much about them?
I took mine into the greenhouse to over-winter and put a couple of leaves over the crown.
I removed the leaves today to see if it was still alive.
There is some new growth there but the top of the leaf is black. See pic.
I'm assuming that this is some kind of frost damage?
Will the gunnera be ok? I really don't want this to perish as it grew quite big last year. You can't tell in the picture but i couldn't find a pot big enough for it. So it's in a cut off 200L water butt. So, roughly a 130 litre pot.

It will be fine mate .
The black as you say might be frost damage but more likely its the leaf that was on top of it thats rotted and caused the damage .
Yea i like them but no space they grow massive ..lol.

I know absolutely nothing about them but I like them, they give a sort of prehistoric tropical feel especially around a pond.

Thanks.
I originally had it as a marginal pond plant but with no soil in the basket, it didn't do too well. So i removed it.
Last winter i 2014/15 i put it in the greenhouse. By the time i had considered getting it out, it had grown too large to fit through the door !
So i attempted to find a big pot while i found somewhere to put it. I couldn't find anything under about £50.00 so in the end (as stated) i put it in a cut off water butt. The roots were really pot bound.
I will have to un-pot it again to fit it out of the greenhouse. When do you think it will be safe to put it outside?

I have one too and it got massive, it has been relocated now though. Not checked to see if any new growth yet. I do like them.

they can stay out, but since its gone into protection it will be a bit more fragile and can be slowly introduced to the outside world when the last frosts pass, though ideally returned inside at night to start with, but some straw or growers fleece on the crown should see it happy enough

Mate, thanks for that but did you read the bit about the size of the pot it's in ?
I'm not Geoff Capes you know !
Once it's out it's going to have to stay out.

yeap, thats why I said about ideally it should return to the warmth of the glass house,
can you get it on a bogey and wheel in and out or have you a greenhouse with an annoying door lip? (used to have one like that and used to stumble out every time after catching an edge)
wrap it in straw or gardeners fleece when it does go out, also to assist in making it lighter give it a few days off being watered to reduce the wet weight a bit

Nice looking plant mate I'm gong to start to look at what to put round the outside of my pond used to have a few shelves for marginal plants but since the pond refurb these have all gone.

Bowsaw....yep. Got the lip and accompanied by a step and an awkward, narrow right hand turn. I will make sure it's well wrapped up. Cheers.
I've got another 2 smaller gunnera in the conservatory. The one is doing really well with lots of sproutings. The other (a year older) just has one really tall sprouting and 2 small sprouting.
I have some umbrella palm for round the outside. I'm going to try it in the (under construction) veg filter to start with but i don't know how it will do without soil. So it will be outside in pots instead/as well.
I think a few big hostas look good too. Also ferns

Pootkoi - Could you add a veg filter or bog garden at the side of the pond?

I have another little pond that is literally crammed with plants. You can barely see the water even at this time of year !
You can just see the edge of the pond where the arrow is.

Anyone know the best place to plant a gunnera outside?
I put this on a gardening forum but no replies yet.
Our garden faces northwest as you look from house to bottom of garden. It's on a mild slope till the wooden trellis half way down, when it slopes more steeply. I have attached hopefully a diagram of the layout and a gunnera update from today. You can't tell from the photo but the leaf at the top is well over 2ft wide.

the tub some where shady as they like their base damp, the leaves, well as you know or are about to find out will grow like mad and block out the light in time, so in a area where they wont over-shade light sensitive plants and away from a path as many people are sensitive to the hair like spines on the leaf stalks
