    aquaponics

hello all I have been looking at ways to cut down my water changes and came across aquaponics which in theory seems like a good idea just wondered if anyone has try before.

Not exactly sure what you're asking here but most pond filters use nitrification to process toxic ammonia into harmless nitrate, isn't that the same as aquaponics?

Well what I mean is would having a aquaponics setup after myfilter help process the nitrate through the plants and in turn would this speedup the converting of ammonia to nitrate if the nitrate is getting removed bythe plants? Then there would be less ammonia and nitrates and algae in my pondcutting down my water changes.

What's more appropriate for a Koi pond is an Anoxic set up, what you're suggesting will help to remove nitrate but it won't particularly help with the ammonia and nitrite.
If you click on the mankysanke link in my signature you'll find Anoxic filtration is covered there in detail.

    Rob,

Hydroponics is all about growing plants using water as a growing medium and adding nutrients to ensure good growth. Aquaponics is an idea where plants grown in a hydroponic situation but using fish or other aquatic creatures to supply those nutrients. The accent on either of those systems is on plant growth not fish welfare.

As Steve says, the anoxic filter system would be a better bet because water changes don't just reduce nitrate, they also reduce the many other pollutants that build up in the water. We usually refer to water changes removing nitrate because nitrate is easy to measure and the others aren't. Anoxic clarification baskets not only remove nitrate but they remove a whole range of water pollutants by bacterial action.

I'm often asked how anoxic filtration works but that, and it's many advantages, cannot be described in a few sentences so I've written a comprehensive article that addresses all the questions and points that have been raised over the past several years. Read it on the link below and you might find that it suits your requirements better than trying to make an aquaponic system that would be suitable for a koi pond.

aquaponics is the combining of hydroponics (the growing of vegetation) with aquaculture (rearing aquatic animals) in the same system, you can get a much greater yield from the same footprint, but it also limits how the system can be run

theres more of a trend to use tilapia rather than carp as the food fish though in the small movement in this country that have adopted it, in part as the consumption of carp has all but died out and its rare to see on the slab, in the few remaining true fishmongers that are left

theres another version more common in the far east where chickens are reared over brakesh ponds, their guano falls into the water (supplemented with shovel loads of pig poo) and feeds algae growth and this is then taken on by the shellfish like tiger prawns being reared in the ponds
